shhh. no talk. small scorpan appreciation time
They’re younger here.
He’s usually on Ian Flynn’s message board now, the “Bumbleking forums.” (He’s good friends with Sonic & Megaman writer Ian Flynn.) Yeah, his Disney comics looked pretty cool to. The way he draws them reminds me of the classic Disney cartoons, only a bit modernized a tad.
Jon still does work on the Sonic comic, drawing “Off-Panel” gag comics, making ads for the series, and such.
Jon Grey’s still drawing for Sonic? I remember him commenting on Ken Penders’s message board (for lack of a better term) back in the day; he was a lot of fun, and a nice guy to boot. Talented cartoonist, too; I see he’s drawing some Disney comics now.
I think Jon “Dubs” Grey (who’s a funny guy BTW) has a more outlandish style then Fosgitt’s. I used to dislike Grey’s art for the Sonic comic, but it grew on me, and I really like how he does the “Off-Panel” gag mini-comics for the series. (Even making a few AoStH background gag nods.)
@Jarkes
I don’t know, I feel the show, and a few other comic artists are guilty of that, as well sometimes.
I’d compare Fosgitt more to Jon ‘Dubs’ Gray than Yardley myself.
@Jarkes
Is putting them in bipdal positions in his work really such a cause of drama? Ugh. To each their own, I dont mind. I just want him to not have to draw for a poor script written by a SJW jackass like Anderson or Whitley.
I don’t mind the more cartoonish take myself, but I think people’s main problem with Fosgitt is his tendency to draw ponies in bipedal positions a little too much. When I pointed out how ponies end up in bipedal positions in the show and other comics all the time, I was told that in those other cases it’s just for a quick gag and otherwise not very common, whereas Fosgitt tends to just do it regardless as to whether or not it makes any sense as a joke or otherwise.
I guess the proportions look a li’l similar to Gen 3/3.5, but they look more cartoonier, and chibi-ish to me, which I like. Plus I like the facial expressions Fosgitt does. He kinda reminds me of Tracey Yardley who does work on the Sonic & Megaman comics.
@Beau Skunky
I’ve seen Fosgitt’s original work in Bodie Troll, and it’s pretty cute. His pony work is a bit… odd, but it’s not terrible. He kinda makes them look like Gen 3/3.5 than the traditional Gen 4 model in a way.
Usually my issues with the IDW books isn’t the art, but the script itself. I can forgive Fosgitt’s art, but it’s been paired with Anderson’s script. Tony Fleecs is shaky with his EqG work, but his other stuff (like the Tirek issue) is superb, Price is still the standard but I have no idea why Katie’s scripts are declining so badly.
It’s also ironic, ‘cause back when alot of people were saying the “show was ruined foreverz,” (back in the drama-filled Season 3 days) and disowned the show, they migrated to the comics, and began praising them as much better then the show, and such.
Also, I never got the hate over Jay Fosgitt’s art. (It’s not like he makes the stories.)
I like his cute/cartoony style for the ponies. I know it looks nothing like the show’s art style, but that’s kinda why I like it. It’s a nice change of pace to me.
I mean, if people can appreciate fanart in different styles, I don’t know why they can’t the official comics. (The Sonic comic’s had art styles that don’t always match it’s official art, as well before. In fact, some now complain that it’s art looks to much like the Sega art nowadays.)
If all the artists just perfectly emulated the show/Lauren Faust’s art style, I’d find the comic quite dull personally.
A lot of people think the comics have slipped in quality over the past, what, 8 months? a year? Anyway, some of those people think it’s a severe dropoff in quality, from generally great to uniformly awful, and they blame pretty much everyone working on the comics, but especially Katie Cook, Bobby Curnow, Ted Anderson, and Jay Fosgitt; they also blame Sprite and other IDW forum operators for silencing any critics, and Illustrious Q for saying everything’s still OK.
Pretty much typical 4chan stuff, really. Anyone could’ve seen this coming 2+ years ago.
This doesn’t really count as a mouthpiece, though, so I can’t put it on my filters.
