CN Real was a symptom. Warner Bros./Turner decided that producing original cartoons was getting too expensive. They tried to go the Disney/Nick route of making terrible kid-based live action shows to save money. It did not end well, which is why CN is pretty much back to cartoons.  
The downside is they’ve favored the 11-minute format as a pretty strict rule for most of their new shows, so half-hour stuff that can develop deeper characterization and narrative has been rare of late. Arguable exceptions to that side-effect: Adventure Time, Steven Universe.
