Scootloo being a Changeling nymph has always been an idea I liked, and one that could probably make a really good story if done correctly:
 
  1. I would imagine that a Pegasus’ feathery wings are a lot different than a Changeling’s insectoid wings, which could compound her difficulties in trying to learn how to fly when assuming a pony’s shape all the time.
     
  2. The fact that we haven’t seen her parents (yet) could work out with her being a lone scout or exile who couldn’t bring herself to replace anypony and so invented an entirely new identity.
     
  3. The two ponies we saw her look up to have been Rainbow Dash, Element of Loyalty who still manages to be an individual, and the Masked Mare Do Well, a super heroine who has to hide her true identity from everypony else.
