Try explaining that to either new users unfamiliar with the purpose of it, or old users that did it wrong from the start. All trying to clue them in will do is set off an argument about how you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about because “You must be new here”, the single easiest thing to say when you want to, and I quote, put someone in their place on any of the Chan boards.
It’s a no win situation, yo. A lot of people don’t know the purpose of sagebombs and trying to inform them is like trying to tell a child not to have candy before dinner. Luckily, there’s still plenty of people around who do know, and even more people that just ignore threads that they don’t like, as opposed to sage-ing them just because they’re jerks.
It’s 4chan, what can I say? I can’t make the argument that everyone there is great, because everyone isn’t. It’s more like what BP #25E8 said. The place (and places, if we count all of the other chans) is great so long as you know what to avoid. It’s the internet, after all. If I try to say that 4chan is the worst of the worst, I’d just be ignoring all of the other assholes out there, and I can’t do that.
Really, I defend the place because I see everyone online acting the same way most of the time. 4chan is just easy to pick on because there’s a bunch of idiots all in one place, you know? Heh. Poor guys. Must suck to be the regular users there who aren’t asshats.
What sage was suppose to do is not bump the thread when replying. People thought it was suppose to bump it down, which it never actually did. So obviously, if someone did bump it while it being saged, they’re still bumping it.
It’s debatable as to whether or not it ever really worked or if people just wanted something to fulfill their base reaction to threads that they didn’t like / enjoy. After all, a few guys can sagebomb a thread all the live-long day, but more often than not it doesn’t actually stop the others from keeping the thread alive if they really want to.
Agreed, I’ve had plenty of fun there. Not every user on the board is there to spend their entire time screaming into their keyboard and not every unpopular thread gets sagebombed back into the Stone Age.
@ExtremeLurkerHomeEdition
You’ve never been to the less popular boards there. I used to be a regular on a few of them for quite a while and they have adequate communities with legitimate discussions. No excessive name calling, porn spams, pointless randomness or anything else that you would find on the main boards such as /b/, /a/,/v/ and /mlp/. Occasionally there would be joke topics or trolls in typical 4chan fashion but nothing that got out of hand.

4chan in a nutshell. There has never, and will never, be a constructive discussion on that site. Which, well, some people might think that works in 4chan’s favor while I just see it as a waste of space/time.
Hey what can I say? Some people are really good at baiting. Some might even call them masters at it. Master Bai-oh you all se where I’m going with this.
Also, my apologies for the wall of text. You may use it to build a structure if you’d like. Probably pretty sturdy.

I haven’t seen a sagebomb for awhile now.

I don’t think sage even works anymore.

4chan is fine if you know what to avoid.
I dunno, there’s a few of them I’ve been in. They’re far in between, but they exist.

Benzaie?
I agree to a point.
