I use a similar program, also known as Paint.net. Its really good for making cloud textures.

this is maybe not a good example of GIMP…

Its the best Photo editor I ever used bar none. Helps me get good photos of the sun too since Alberta is covered in smoke.

Well, it is called the Image Manipulation Project…that’s really all it was intended for, and it does it well enough, I find.

In fact, i’m already using it, precisely for sketching and the lineart. However, gimp better fits my needs when it comes to colouration ; less memory consumption, more precise layers management, and more useful tools and features.

Have you tried Krita? It’s a far better multi-platform Photoshop-substitute than the GIMP will ever be, and it has better line correction/stabilization than Photoshop. Really the GIMP is for editing, not drawing or painting.

I use gimp because it’s multiplatform, windows being more and more horrendous with its users.
 
Also it respect my freedom to draw strange things with ponies - photoshop probably doesn’t regularly send small screencaps of your work to Adobe, but you can’t be sure.

I use gimp because i need the “smooth stroke” to draw with a mouse.
 

I use GIMP to retrace and color in all of my drawings. The reason I use it is because its the only art program I can download for free in which I can make my drawings look less like ass. But even so, I’m still not sure if its the correct program to use to make my drawings look good compared to what everyone else in the fandom uses.  
I’ve used Corel Painter in the past to do the same job that GIMP does but I lost it when my hard drive’s memory was liquidated due to catching a virus.

Huh. I only use GIMP for manipulating images.. as the name would imply, I guess.  
Sadly it doesn’t have Content-Aware Scale and the third-party one isn’t very good

People that don’t like GIMP dont know how to use gimp right. But then I just use it for pixel art so mabey my opinion doesnt count.

Eh, I moved away from Gimp mostly because the tablet support was pretty shaky for me. (The devs that maintain the library GIMP uses to handle tablet input didn’t own tablets/had significantly more pressing issues.)

You’re right, unfortunately the brush engine is clearly behind the concurrence.

If you think Gimp isn’t good art software, then you aren’t using it right.

There is only simple brushes in gimp. No pen or brush simulation. So the software doesn’t make look good your lines while the photoshop or painttool sai does.
 

 
But, there is smooth stroke in gimp. so you can use a simple mouse to draw smooth lines.
