Description

I’ve mentioned how much the outfits in Equestria Girls annoyed me. So I decided to redesign them a bit. Some was just aesthetic, but others were legit problems for me. On to explanations/justifications! Though I did give them all redesigned LoE Crystals.

Rainbow: I hated that they put her in a skirt, since she’s the most ‘tomboy’ character. I know they gave her shorts under it, but still. Had to trade that for basketball shorts. Also, whenever they dress Rainbow they slap a bunch of colors on her. They need to go minimal on the colors. Like, her mane stands out so much more when she wears fewer colors.

Pinkie: With how much she moves? The original jacket was too distracting and skirts are a bad idea for jumping around, climbing, and hanging upside down(unless you’re okay with showing everyone your underwear). So she gets shorts and a tank top to give her better movement. I added the socks, arm things, and ribbons just because.

Twilight/Sci-Twi: They tried too hard to make her look nerdy that it’s honestly kind of killing me. Like, yeah, she’s a nerd. But she’s not the ‘let’s buy a dress shirt, sweater vest, bow tie, and knee socks’ type. Twi’s more of the ‘comfort clothes’ type, tossing on whatever feels good and getting to research. So basic jeans, good shoes, and a simple shirt is fine. The flannel/badass coat were aestheic choices on my part, but 1.) Flannel is totally a comfort clothes look 2.) Twilight has absolutely earned the badass coat, and she thinks it’s a good mix between labcoat and a Wizard cloak. The high/low ponytail is just aesthetic.

Rarity: For the most part I liked her original outfit. But the shirt was weird and I don’t like those boots. That was just a personal aesthetic problem and not a ‘this outfit is bad for this character’s personality’ problem. Still, I do what I want, so I gave her more of a dress shirt and simpler black boots, along with the necklace.

Fluttershy: Oh stars I hated her outfit. You’re going to take Fluttershy, the super-shy and full of anxiety ‘oh stars don’t look at me!’ character, and put her in a white tank top and a miniskirt??? Absolutely not!! So I went with pants an a regular tshirt. Also the vest which is part aesthetic and part practical. It has pockets for pet treats.

Applejack: All I did was give her pants. AJ is practical. While she might wear a skirt to a party, pants/shorts are much better for the day-to-day, as she is very active and, as I mentioned with Pinkie’s outfit, skirts aren’t good for ‘active’ unless you’re really okay with showing off your underwear.

Fluttershy works better with pastles. If you want to use that brown, better use it sparringly like in accessories and shoes.

Pinkie and Twilight look like they haven’t escaped the 2000s,despite being teens in the 2010s. Twilight IS a nerd, so she’s going to dress like one. Not some hopelessly outdated kid who stepped out of Hot Topic. Maybe if Twilight was kicking vampire ass like Buffy it’d work, but Twilight shoots magical rainbows.

Tbh, yeah, I can’t quite nail down a color pallet for Flutters that I like. I like that green on her, and I like the turquoise of her newer dress, but I can’t figure out a way to work any other colors with them properly. Maybe I should test it with more of a lighter khaki?

Also, Pinkie doesn’t care about ‘cool’, and the trench coat can be cool if the person wearing it qualifies for making it the ‘Badass Longcoat’ trope, which Twi kinda does. (I might be biased as my current obsession has a lot of characters using that trope!)

Trench coats stopped being cool after the 2000’s. So did arm warmers.

Fluttershy’s color scheme is really offputting too. I get what it was going for, but it doesn’t work.

I like it! I love Equestria Girls, but sometimes I think about trying to make my own version of it. Like, how it would look if instead of the teenage versions of the Mane Six we had five teenagers who resemble the M6 in terms of personality helping a college-aged Twilight Sparkle (posing as a young teacher) in getting her crown back from Sunset (who would be a teen in both worlds). Anyway, I like the Digital Series’ clothes but you did an amazing job in these clothes!

To answer, I do have some opinions on the newer outfits.
Rainbow: A lot better. My only complaint is that they still love slapping every color onto her, but at least it’s mostly contained to the pants.
Pinkie: The color bothers me as it’s a bit monochromatic. It’s actually a reverse of my usual complaint with Rainbow. Pinkie is, well, Pink. You need to have other colors to offset the pink. Her original outfit had mostly blues and purples, which complimented her. Style wise though, the fluffy skirt is great and the tights fix the problem of ‘accidental underwear shot’.
Sci-Twi: still a bit too much in the ‘nerd aesthetic’ for me. Better than some of the other outfits, but it still puts too much emphasis on ‘oh she’s the smart one’(which is honestly covered by the glasses alone).
Rarity: I liked her old outfit much better. The newer one is too… extra. Which usually isn’t a bad thing since this is Rarity and Extra™ is a character trait. But that outfit is a bit much for a casual outfit. It would fit in better for one of the concerts or a short ‘lets get fancy’ sequence, but not a default.
Fluttershy: I actually like this dress far better than her original outfit. Only complaints I have about it are related to personal headcanons that I can’t really use to judge this.
Applejack: My complaint here is still the same. “Give her pants”.
Bonus: Sunset: my favorite Sunset outfit is the blue one from Friendship Games. However, this new one is similar to one I sort-of drew her in a while back, so I think it fits. Though I do think the magenta is a bit off. Maybe use a different pink or go back to the blue.
