If that was conventional, or worked at all for that matter, there would be no old ponies. I’ll bet dollars to doughnuts (or, these days, the other way around) that it’s a temporary or otherwise greatly limited effect.

But you have to remember that these are THE Elemets of Harmony that we’re talking about. What if something comes up that requires the element’s magic to defeat, but hundreds of years after the ponies’ normal lifespan? They can’t just find another element of loyalty or element of kindness, there can only be one.
 
I think the Mane 6 will all have to become immortal, under Celestia’s say in doing so.

but what if they don’t want their lives prolonged ?  
take the apple familly, aj would have to see ab, mac and everyone die, not better.  
of course you could make theses live longer too, but their friends/lovers would die too.
 
so this isn’t really a solution, at one point, everyone would have to have their live prolonged.

One problem with this scenario:  
Age magic.
 
As far as we know alicorns arn’t even imortal by nature and celestia and luna use magic to prolong their life.

Really, Twilight Sparkle wouldn’t just let her friends die of old age. She’s one of the highest level magic users now.
 
She can probably cast age spells till kingdom come if she wants.
 
…And if not, she has plenty of time to work on it.
 
Her friends will not die. Not From old age anyways.

Spike would have to suffer a similar fate before. Worse, he’d actually see Twilight, a pony most precious to him, die, while he lived for thousands of years.
 
At least that way Twilight and Spike will still have each other. :sadsmile:
