Keep moving forward
Remember your order of operations. Groupings (do the stuff in parentheses or brackets first), exponents and radicals (nth roots fall under this), multiplication and division left to right, addition and subtraction left to right, all in that order. A lot of people seem to not understand that it isn’t “multiplication OR division” or “addition OR subtraction”, how you work your problem can drastically change the answer. Of course if you’re doing higher math, things are gonna vary.

I’m much better versed in mathematics now, but when ever I hear the term “Imaginary Number” I can’t not think of Calvin and Hobbes.
Edit: Also looking back on it now, I can’t decided if Hobbes is trolling or genuinely doesn’t know and is just making stuff up to sound like he knows what he’s doing. I’m gonna assume both.

I don’t think you go from basic arithmetic to complex numbers in one step. Unless Equestria’s curriculum is really weird and/or awesome.

The U.S. also uses a dot for multiplication at higher levels. Usually around the time they start teaching algebra, so the cross isn’t confused with the letter x.

The square root of a negative doesn’t have a solution in the real number system. You have to use complex numbers to represent it (the solutions for x² = -1 being the imaginary number i and its opposite -i).
