That’s one interpretation.

Another is that her acting like a bitch towards her own team mates is largely consistent with the way she has portrayed previously.

At the GGG, she ditched RD and proceeded to ignore her, the hero who not only saved equestria with the other mane 6, but who has also personally saved Spitfires life at the best young flyer competition. I guess she’s not big on gratitude or being nice to her fans…
When sent to ponyville to stop a rampaging dragon, she and her whole team was taken out by spike with a water tower in around 10 seconds flat.
When tasked with overseeing the gathering of water for cloudsdale, she remained seated and only watched, as the ponyville pegasi needed just 1 more pegasus to add their wingpower or the whole operation would fail. Is it really that much to ask the most experienced and well trained flier present to actually chip in? Or would she rather she the whole operation fail than get off her fat flank?
As a drill instructor, she remained entirely ignorant of the progress her students where making at the wonderbolts academy. She was sitting around signing photographs when RD and lightning dust unleashed a tornado while civilians where blundering right on to the highly dangerous training course.
Every single time she has been in an episode she has either been incompetent or acting like an asshole.
Keeping this in mind, is it really such a stretch that she would try to kick one of her best fliers off the team after a minor upset, mere weeks before the biggest athletic competition of the year, disrupting the coorditation and teamwork of the whole team with bickering and infighting.

I’m all for alternate interpretations of many characters, but I don’t seem much in the show that could support alternate interpretations.

I love how everyone’s so quick to hate Spitfire that this never occurs to them: Maybe she WASN’T lying. Maybe she was GENUINELY trying to make sure Soarin’s wing got completely better and Rainbow Dash was nothing more than a temporary replacement until that happened, and Rainbow Dash and Soarin took it completely the wrong way. Thus, when Rainbow Dash calls her out, she’s thinking, “Oh, that’s what she thought was going on? Crap, I messed up bad, didn’t I?”

The fanfic “Spitfire Stumbles” by Metool Bard was what presented this alternative character interpretation to me, showing that even though Spitfire had the best of intentions, she still feels guilty over the whole incident. Frankly, I’d prefer to consider THAT interpretation of the episode canon. THAT is how you do a “fix fic” RIGHT.

Fleetfoot deserved it more.

And he’ll probably be booted down to the reserve team for a long time. Must be pretty cathartic though…

One good thing about the way Spitfire was handled in this episode: I no longer have the desire to try to find a decent Funko figure of her and drop $10-15 on it.

I guess the show staff do see her as a jerk, after all.

People keep saying this show isn’t a soap opera but if they keep teasing us with implications like this I’m going to start wishing it was.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

@BigMax
We don’t know their motives, there were like what? Only two of them. Maybe they were like OH SHIT SOME CRAZY SHIT IS GOING ON OVER THERE, LET’S HELP THEM BECAUSE WE’RE EXPERT FLIERS. If they were military, they probably would have sent more than two ponies to go up against a giant bloody monster. Also… Military personnel do not race in betting events…
Face it, we know next to nothing about the wonderbolts.
What if they were just a simple sports team? (Sports teams have captains too)

Being off duty doesn’t change the fact that you’re still military personnel. You’re still held accountable for any actions you do off duty and will still be punished

@BigMax
The Mane Six got sent against a dragon, and they’re clearly not military. I thought their attack on greed Spike made an interesting callback to Rainbow’s approach to above mentioned dragon, which was to stupidly charge in and uselessly kick it in the face. I got the impression the Wonderbolts were just in the area, heard the news and just rocketed off.

@StarrySkies
Well… the Wonderbolts have been used against a public menace like greedy Spike (failing miserable, among other things). Why sending them is they’re not in the military, but just some stunt ponies?
Background Pony #749C
I remember that McCarthy said we’ll find out what the Wonderbolts really are this season. This episode didn’t tell us anything, therefore there will be more Wonderbolt episodes on the way. Considering the team did qualify, we’ll see Spitfire/Soarin’/Fleetfoot later again.

Also it’s not even confirmed the wonderbolts are a government organization that’s under military conduct.

It’s not even confirmed Spitfire is Soarin’s commanding officer, it is possible for there to be ranks above captain and it is possible for their to be more than one captain.

For those in discussion about military regulations, everyone was off-duty, they were even out of uniform, they’re just ponies from the wonderbolts, if they were on behalf of the wonderbolts they would have been either wearing their uniform something highly similar to their uniform. No uniform, no rank, then no acknowledgment.

As a military veteran I will tell you that striking a superior officer under ANY circumstances is an automatic grounds for court martial. It doesn’t matter if Spitfire was supposedly being a cunt, she’s still Soarin’s boss. A court Martial in and of itself isn’t as big a deal as many make it out to be though. Soarin’s punishment could be as light as a letter of reprimand depending on the circumstances.
