THESE ARE A CLOSED ‘SPECIES’ (if you will) YOU MAY NOT MAKE ANY OF THESE!!! by ‘species’ I ean the Alicorn Ancestors (these three types of alicorns. I know others will look like these, but using the Alicorn Ancestors idea as well as these types of alicorns is stealing)*
Anyhoo, on to the picture!
If you haven’t watched the Brony Notion’s alicorn theory video, here it is! www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRZbjM…
In it, he talks about a land possibly to the west of Equestria that is completely inhabited by alicorns (where Celestia and Luna are from). I think I at least partially agree with this, and I decided to try my hand at some concept art.
Basically, the alicorns in the picture are the ancestors of ‘today’s’ ponies and alicorns. I’ve seen lots of styles on DA that incorperate traditional unicorn tails/ fluffy earth ponies/ bird tail-finned pegasi, so I decided to put that in.
  1. (Far left)
    Habitat: Deserts and Steppes
    Ancestors of: Alicorns and pegesi
    General:
These guys are, as I said, the ancestors of the pegesi ponies. They are extremely lean, fit, slender, tough ponies. Living in the open plains/deserts has made these ponies rely on flight much more than their cousins (below). They have evolved into a very aerodynamic build, and their wings are long and tapered, like falcon* *or albatross. This wing shape allows them to glide very far distances which conserves a LOT of energy out in the open, and also allows for fast escapes and powerful dives.
They travel in herds across the desert, adopting a nomadic lifestyle and moving with the food and water sources. They learn to fly and run at an incredibly young age, but before that their mothers will carry them as they travel. They rely on speed, with both their legs and wings, to take them away from danger. Almost none will leave their manes and tails long, and it is common to see spiky manes and short tails, increasing their speed. **Their VERY thin horns also reduce weight and drag during flight, ***and these alicorns rarely use magic for anything but levitating objects. *They are great warriors and greatly admire the free spirit. They often sing as they travel, and their music is often compared to the wind. (the flute is their favorite instrument)
  2. (Center)
    Habitat: Forests and swamps
    Ancestors of: Alicorns and unicorns
    General:
Being the ancestors of the unicorns of Equestria, they carry the traditional spiral horn and long thin tail. These ponies live in the forests, both deciduous and coniferous. They remain an average pony build, if slightly bulky, and their wings resemble those of a hawk, very rounded and short for weaving in and out of trees. It is rare that any of these ponies will cut their hair, and both stallions and mares are often seen with long, flowing manes and tails
They don’t fly much at all, and spend most of their lives on the ground. They live in villages that have been magically incorporated into the forest (think of Lothlorien from Lord of the Rings). These alicorns usually spend a lot of time studying natural magic and science. *They have drawn from both of these fields and created a type of natural and simplistic magic. *Much of their culture is based around this, and the head sorcerers and scientists are usually the ones in charge of the village, or at least called upon during decision making. In these places, knowledge is power.
  3. (Right)
    Habitat: Mountains and tundra
Ancestor of: Alicorns and earth ponies.
    General:
It’s easy to tell where earth ponies get all their fluff. These cold-climate ponies can tough out even the most freezing ice storm. Their thick, Shetland pony/ mountain goat style fur is extremely thick, especially during the winter. It acts like a heavy blanket, keeping almost all body heat trapped against the body. They have curly, thick manes and tails which, although they don’t get very long, protect ears and legs from the cold. Their curious double horns are similar in texture to that of a goat’s horn.

These guys use their wings (shaped like short eagle wings) to navigate the less windy parts of their homes, but will often hoof it for most of the time. They can run all day long without stopping, may it be gentle hills of tundra or a steep mountain slope. Their homes are often built around caves, which can be used as emergency shelters. They often spend two seasons (ex. fall and winter) on the tundra, then travel to the mountains for another two seasons (ex. spring and summer). The seasons depend on the tribe.
The culture of these mountain-dwellers is a happy one. It centers around family, often including several generations of family. The tribes are friendly with one another, and some ponies have been known to live ‘between tribes’, which is not discouraged. Music is also a big part of these ponies lives. Imagine Irish pub sings mixed with rowdy marching chants. Sometimes, at multi-tribal gatherings, there will be improvising singing contests. (the drum is their favorite instrument)
