@deathsia
Since we’re talking about Scootaloo, you do realise that Scoot having a disability was Faust’s plan from the start, but she was told not to pursue it right? Faust’s words carry far more weight than you’d like. Like a gilmpse into the future, that by being seen, changed that future. It is still a good guide to what will happen, or how things work, until we know for sure.
However Applejacks parents will never be confirmed to be dead in the show, due to rules. The same rules that means Scootaloo can never confirm if she’s an orphan. In such a case, absence of a clear answer is implying the answer can’t be said, and that she is an orphan. Same with Lyra and Bon Bon, who go out of their way to imply the opposite of the truth, to draw more attention to the fact they’re following these rules.
So in short. Your argument is wrong, but Scootaloo can be safely assumed to be an orphan. No confirmation here, not at all, but yes she is parentless.
From Scootaloo’s POV, there’s not much difference. Either she’s an orphan or her parents are so useless she may as well be one. That’s tragic no matter which way you spin it.
@Darth Sonic
It’s not really a conundrum, just canon kept deliberately vague, which is actually a mark of good writing when you’re doing a serial.

@deathsia
You’re getting a little meta-commentary mixed in with your canon/headcanon debate there.
Anyway, while it’s certainly reasonable to conclude Scootaloo is an orphan, there’s been nothing to confirm that in canon. Question: If Scootaloo’s parents show up in a later episode, will you call it a retcon?
@ObliviaTheChangeling
Honestly, it’s either Orphan or negligence bordering on abuse. Kinda wish the staff addressed this earlier so as to avoid this conundrum.
That solid enough for you? As of now, Larson’s joke statement is more believable than what the image above is going off of. For now, Lauren Faust’s words are the ONLY solid proof we have regarding Scootaloo’s parents. The show never said she doesn’t have parents at all, as such, Lauren Faust saying she has very busy parents that are almost never around is canon until proven non-canon.
@deathsia
The first examples you gave aren’t exactly the best ones given the circumstances are pretty different from this issue.
I actually subscribe to the interpretation that they are dead or gave her up, as the alternative is that they have been horribly neglectful for the entirety of Scootaloo’s life, but I’ll readily admit the current evidence can go either way.
@deathsia
You’re free to believe whatever canon you want, but I’m not seeing hard evidence for either one as the evidence is currently the same for both.
Are scoots parents dead? Maybe.
Did scoots parents give her up? Maybe.
Are scoots parents busy bodies and never spend any time with her? Maybe.
Would all three of these result in her being sad about her parents “not giving her the support she wished she had”, idol worshiping RD, seeing her as surrogate family, and explain pretty much everything about her?
Yes.
Now, since you brought up those other episodes, where is that “footnote of implication” that has “Orphan” written on it?
Your using the extremely weak defense of the writers hint at the cannon instead of confirm it outright which once again, holds about as much weight as a Pegasus feather in July.
Let me guess, the next thing your going to say is that Lyra and Bon-Bon aren’t lovers because despite the fact that EVERYTHING SCREAMED IT.
Or let me guess, Derpy’s name is really muffins because it says so in the shows credits right?
Or better yet: “Tanks for the Memories” wasn’t an episode about “the stages of dealing with loss” because it had to do with Hibernation right?
Except as I point out once again, Faust’s opinions and words have no ZERO impact on the show since 2012 or so. So you CAN’T use her words as cannon unless you are trying to desperately cling to a writer’s ideal story who no longer works for the show for many years; which is kinda sad actually if you do…
@Daneasaur
I think its more accurate to say that the “head cannon” going on around here is yours pal. We have cannon proof and you only have the words of a someone(albit great show writer) who hasn’t worked on staff of the show for 4+ years. Those tweets hold no more weight than a Pegasus feather in the month of July.
@deathsia
In cases like this, it’s “true until proven false”, the same with many things from the IDW comics that have not yet been proven in the show itself. Scootaloo merely said she doesn’t have supportive parents, she never said anything about not having parents at all. So, unless it’s explicitly stated she is an orphan, it’s not confirmed.
So, by that logic, Faust’s words are just as, if not more valid than the picture above.
@deathsia
Doesn’t change the fact that taking Scootaloo’s home situation in that direction is stupid. There’ll never be child orphans in this show, so Scootaloo’s parents being neglectful busybodies is the most likely theory there is.
@deathsia
Still its good to note that such info is available, lacking as we are in further details from the current writers on this issue.
Basically it could go either way right now. Still the idea that Scootaloo has parents but they have apparently NEVER supported or encouraged her isn’t much better than being an orphan. That’s more than simply being busy.
I still fear that they will show up and they will tell the flashback :/
I doubt it, but fair enough.
Yes, but how they get to the flashback part will likely just straight-up confirm that they ARE dead.
That’s what I meant.
Edited
Joke’s on you; that episode is a confirmed flashback.
Edited
Next week will prove you wrong on AJ’s parents.
Functionally parentless, to be exact.

While this image is wrong, you’re wrong as well. Faust’s tweets have literally zero weight past season 2.
Headcanon: Scootaloo is an orphan.
Headcanon: Scootaloo has negligent, never there parents.
Fact: We have no fucking clue, other than the fact Scootaloo is in a situation that would cause her to envy Dash’s parents.
Honestly, it’s either Orphan or negligence bordering on abuse. Kinda wish the staff addressed this earlier so as to avoid this conundrum.
The following is an excerpt from a panel coverage as recent as 2015.
Applejack’s parents were always supposed to be deceased. Lauren skirted around the conveyance of it with the Apple Family, which she said was merely a family with a grandmother, older brother, older sister, and younger filly sister. She wanted their relationship to be close, and it showed within their characterization. Lauren admittedly had no backstory for Scootaloo. Her parents were simply never brought up, so any sort of question regarding Scootaloo’s parents would not be answered. Apart from that, Scootaloo to Lauren has parents, there was just never a reason to bring them up. Rarity’s parents notably where made up on the spot for the episode they were in.
After Larson joking that Scootaloo’s parents killed Applejack’s parents, he moved onto the next question.

They are examples of things that were heavily hinted at to the point that the only thing keeping it from being confirmed was a few words.

So you have hard solid evidence of the orphan side?
No?
Then I guess we share the same boat, though on our side, we have someone who DID work on the team and their side of it.
Is it applicable right now? Have they accepted the side of the fancanon where she is an orphan or stuck with the fact that her parents are busybodies?
No one knows.

That’s mainly what I’m going under.
No solid evidence on the show.
Get info from someone who USED to work on the show = “best we got to go off of until further notice”
