Spike tries to reason with Grubber who is reluctant to turn against his captain.
So, I know that I have been uploading quite a few things related to the 2017 MLP movie as of late. I recently rewatched the film yet again and while I still love it to this day (The film actually got me into the show) the more I watched, the more I realized how many parts of it were a big missed opportunity; Specifically in relation to the antagonists of the film. Some characters felt underutilized or mishandled, and others just felt plain unneeded. So after giving it some thought, I decided to do a bit an amateur rewrite of the film.
Now to summarize, this isn’t going to be a “Full” retake on the film, but rather just with certain parts or characters. For the most part, things play out almost exactly the same as in the official plot, but with a few slight twists. And to start things off, I present my revamped version of Grubber. Voiced by Michael Pena, Grubber was a comic relief character; Serving as Tempest’s sidekick and comedic foil. He was there only for jokes and cringy dialogue. This probably explains why people tended to not like him (One friend of mine referred to him as a Sonic Forces reject which is fitting considering that he is a hedgehog XD). He is a character that I feel falls under the “Underutilized” category. With a little creativity, so much more could have been done with him and I have a pretty decent idea of what that could be.
In this rewrite, Grubber serves as Tempest’s first mate/second-in-command. He was once a scrounger, living a rather disadvantaged life in Klugetown before Tempest took him in. Since then she has made it clear that he is eternally indebted to her. He serves her faithfully as a result, but often faces abuse both physical and mental. That is until he meets Spike during the events of the film. The two form a bit of a friendship, and Spike even tries to get him to turn to the side of good, but Grubber is too reluctant due to this devotion, debt, and fear of his captain. In the end with a enough courage, he bravely turns against Tempest by shielding Spike and the Mane 6 from getting petrified. With Tempest defeated, he and the storm creatures are redeemed and rejoice in their newly-found freedom.
That’s basically my new idea for him. While he would still have his comedic moments, he would serve a bigger role in the story. I also gave him a bit of a backstory, and a motive to remain with Tempest and the Storm Armada despite his new friendship with Spike. Also you may notice that Grubber and the storm creatures are now sporting pirate garb. That is another creative choice on my part, but I’ll get more into that later.
This is just one of the few little changes I would make to the movie. What would some of your ideas be? Leave a comment below. ;)

Now that’s some great work.
Grubber I always felt got the short end of the stick. Tempest was a decent antagonist. The Storm King was great in the prequel comic. But Grubber was just comic relief that usually didn’t pan out too well. It’s kind of the problem with the Movie in itself - it tries to satisfy longtime fans and bring in new ones, and that leaves the flick not knowing what it wants to be.
