There’s also the contrast. In this tumblrverse, Dash is a small, wiry, tanned and flat-chested woman with an angular face who comes off looking rather masculine, whereas Pinkie is a tall, curvy, busty and very pale red-head, much more in line with normal ideas about what a woman should look like.

And I think this artist should be respected for not wanting to make Dash ‘cute’ or ‘pretty’ in the traditional/conformist sense. Saying that Dash has to be ‘cute’ or ‘pretty’ is like saying ‘all humanized pony interpretations should have big breasts’. There’s no one right interpretation.

It’s not that she doesn’t have enough fat as it is that she looks like she has a boy’s body instead of a woman’s. Like you said, there are a great many female olympians who look very feminine despite having muscles and being very physically strong, and they don’t have men’s hair cuts either.
 
Like I said, Rainbow Dash being athletic and tomboyish doesn’t mean she can’t be cute or pretty. I think too many people reach for the stereotype that tomboy = a girl who is so afraid of letting herself look feminine that she actively tries to hide it.
 
If anything, Applejack is the only one in the show who has shown any actual aversion to being “girly,” but that never seems to stop fan artists from letting her look feminine.

The RD would be fine without so much muscle tone and more feminine face. Even female olympians don’t look that ripped. Healthy ladies almost always have a decent layer of fat.

I don’t know– nothing about her face strikes me as feminine, and those eyebrows remind me of Rainbow Blitz (fanonical Rule 63 version of Rainbow Dash).
 
There’s making Rainbow Dash look like a tomboy, and then there’s making Rainbow Dash look completely sexless (think “10 year old boy”). This picture belongs to the latter school.

Neah, she doesn’t look that dude-ish in this one. Its just the ultra-short hair she ahs. The figure is still a bit feminine though.

I think the downvotes probably have more to do with Dash looking like a dude.

For all you know, Dash is being tanned here. And it’d make sense, since she’s outdoors msot of the time. ALso, its a pointless tag. Removing it.
