80s were an awkward time. The decades before it had good cartoons and the decades after it were good too, but 80s cartoons were just off in America

V The funny thing is, the whole “big eyes” thing came about because Osamu Tezuka was himself inspired by Disney’s character designs. It’s a bit funny to see this in light of that knowledge since it makes the whole thing seem rather retroactive.

Cartoons back then were rather tacky and cheesey because they didn’t have the type of editing tools we take for granted today. The audiences’ taste for cartoons back then may also play a role in the past. Whatever cartoons there are nowadays are more refined and simplistic. Anime has also influenced western cartoons.  
They’ll probably be mystified on how we like cartoon characters with overly big eyes.
