Nostalgia is a funny thing. In the 80s and 90s people would do whatever they could to hide the fact that pixels is all that they could do, and jumped ship immediately to any tech that worked better. Ditto for sound effects and music.
 
I’m more reminded of Colecovision or later Atari games with these, though…

They are programmers, not artists :P  
That’s the reason why 8-bit is so popular today. The lack of artistic ability is far more obvious on anything other than 8-bit.
 
But yeah, artists can even make 8-bit look a lot better.
