AJ in my opinion has always been the ‘pillar’ of the main 6. Not the ‘head’, not the ‘core’, but the ‘pillar’, its base that keeps it from crumbling. While she doesn’t have the ideas, charisma or organization that Twi and RD have, she is grounded, confident, solid, and keeps the group glued together.
 
I hate that dumb joke that some consider AJ a background pony. In my opinion, AJ has always been the 3rd main character. She doesn’t get as much character development or actual focus, but that’s because her heart and morals are simple and pure from the getgo. She can’t lead in every situation, but the group respects her a lot. She’s the roots of the group, tree pun ironically AND literally intended.
 
Fluttershy, Spike and Rarity aren’t ‘as’ natural leaders as those 3, and Pinkie Pie is the obfuscating wild card character, kind of a role separate from main character.
 
What do you think? I’d like your opinion on that assessment James. :)

Can we agree on Applejack being the secondary leader of the Mane6 group? Because if we look back at all the adventures and such then it was always AJ who would take the speaking lead role once Twi was no longer the leader or there to lead.

Nothing about my entry into the thread was argumentative or confrontational; you made a series of broad statements as if they were self-explanatory when they clearly were not, and I asked for an explanation. You were the one who decided to start meowing about it, when you could just as easily have laid out your points without any rancor, like someone who had a hypothesis and expected others to agree with it. Throwing down 592 words worth of completely pointless and unnecessary bitching at me and then coming in after the fact with phony attempts at conciliation rings about as true as Antony’s praise of Brutus.

Dude, you literally– literally, not even figuratively or hyperbolically, literally– wrote over 30,000 words in defense of Flim and Flam. You literally wrote an entire novella’s wordcount in defense of Flim and Flam. Your final entry into that roamin’ spectacle was four entire maximum character-length posts– none of which I ever read, by the way, because seriously– which was over 17,000 characters, all at once.

My god, I forgot how much you like to pick a fight. Was that even TEN sentences? Heck 5/6ths of those things were AFTER you started to CONTINUE to pick a fight, and me giving valid reasons why I don’t like talking to you.
 
The first one was “I can’t track your strange leaps of logic”, which I honestly never have. You’ve made several page essays on Equestrian apple farming and claims on Granny Smith being 300 years old. I simply don’t understand you. No spite.
 
The second one about you not making a lick of sense in your reply about how ‘popularity’ fits in with ‘bias’, which is still true. I still can’t find any sense in it.
 
The rest was just explanation. I clearly defined criteria, not bias, about the role of a character and their role in the story.

Rainbow Dash spotted Twilight coming out of the town hall when Nightmare Moon appeared and brought the other 4 to question them.  
Rainbow Dash was not personally involved with Apploosa, but she went out of her way to learn about their side and also put doubt in Chief Thunderhooves.  
Rainbow Dash kept Twilight under control when Garble burned Celestia’s letter.  
Instead of inverting her morals with a simple vision like the other 4, Discord altered her loyalty to a fake Cloudsdale by showing her a mind scaring vision of everyone in Cloudsdale dying.  
These are examples that follow up with snark-less explanation of secondary main role criteria. I could continue to list each one, but it really doesn’t sound like your trying to listen.

As far as “misconstruing”, you seem to have misunderstood the point of “Best Pony”, which is that most fans have a favorite character, and are therefore more likely to put them on a pedestal and read far more into that character’s appearances than is actually accounted for in the show. That leads directly into “left field”– a term indicating something that has come out of nowhere, without apparent support– which accurately describes your logical leap of Dash-As-Backup-Main-Character, since it is nothing like the immediately obvious and self-evident condition you think it to be, and I have literally never heard anyone put forth that idea before in three years of being active in this fandom. It was an odd theory and you hadn’t made anything like a convincing case for it, so I non-confrontationally asked you to explain it in further detail… which you took as a cue to launch into an admittedly impressive quantity of completely unjustified snark and passive aggression. Hence, “Ask a simple question, get a ‘pointlessly spiteful’ answer, I guess.”

And I could be wrong too. :) Way I see it, RD has aspects of a heroic Rogue; not some shining noble knight, not asshole Thief, but something inbetween. And, just for me personally, that suits me just fine, it works with the way she was implied raised…single father…died early. Perfectly fits her psych profile.
 
Like you said, she’s possibly the most evolved character in MLP.

Just generally agreeing about your points about where she’s stuck as the buttmonkey, and how she’s good with the cutie mark crusaders, and how there was a lot of dumb things the ponies did this episode.
 
I still think despite being secondary butt monkey that she too easily gets by with apologies every time she does something hurtful or reckless or foolish that affects another pony, but I could be wrong. I’m too tired to go into mega analytical details to decide that right now, though.

I did also say in my first ‘Rainbow bugs me’ post here, that she totally redeemed herself by getting Fluttershy that bird whistle for all the sacrifice she made for Rainbow.  
That is one of the goodest friend things she’s ever done. She really appreciates Fluttershy.  
 
She is arguably the most fully realized and most evolved of the mane six too, maybe.

I’m not trying to say that RD’s speech was OVERALL moving in the scope of MLP, especially compared to her earlier speech in Games Ponies Play (effected by the memory of her implied father)…but in the respect to the intelligence of EVERYONE in this episode, I’m just saying it was simply her ROLE again to give a moving speech to make things right.
 
Its relative to the episode. I wasn’t impressed by her speech in this one, I was just stating its purpose.
