I’ve always assumed that Twilight and the other ponies have been trying to teach Spike how to be a gentlemen out of a sense of self-preservation. Knowing how destructive dragons can be, it’s VERY important to them that Spike learn how to control himself and behave responsibly.
He seems to be a quicker study than they realize, though.
it’s exactly what i thought myself. i’m impressed, it gave me so much ideas for sparity fanfictions :p
I like to think his zealousness about ‘Dragon Code’ was a strong opposing reaction to finding out most dragons seem to be selfish jerks in Dragon Quest.

And it managed to be both not him exploiting her nor acting like it was the worst thing ever. He knew what the stakes were, and the aside he had confirmed that.
Indeed. Spike at Your Service notwithstanding, but even a lot of that could be chalked up to youthful enthusiasm overriding common sense.
Spike has become immensely more mature over the past two seasons in general.

Not to mention, Spike was very mature about it in the episode. Apart from his snarky aside glance, he did not act like a jealous jerk (which way too many love triangle conflicts dissolve into, especially in fanfiction; trust me, I tried to write a Pokemon fanfic with a love triangle. It was not pretty), and instead comforted Rarity when she was feeling down about it.
Rarity puts a lot of confidence and trust in Spike.
She has defended him several times, both from words and violence.
She probably holds him in highest regard out of the mane six, besides Twilight of course.
They both consider the other something deeper than just mere friends, I’d think. Not sure if Rarity feels romantic about it, or if she’ll ever come around, but still.
It is really interesting to see them interact.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen her look this small and compact next to him, but I think that visual effect was intended.
Rarity considers Spike one of her closest friends, and the same is true for Spike.
These two have a such a complex relationship.
Still feel for the guy, though.
I say the dev’s age him up a bit. I’d welcome it.
