Only useful when he does harms or manipulate other people man~

He’s smart in a dumb way, like it’s incredibly dumb of him to actually give them fighting chances. Like, it was dumb of him to actually let them get the Elements. Like, he could have sent the ponies looking for them, but then sent those things to Pluto and had Screwball waiting for them at their destination with a horn to play this. And like his plan to give Twiggles a confidence boost by giving her villains to fight was smart, if morally bankrupt, but he could have just created threats he could actually control like the Plunder Seeds or just impersonated various villains himself and “exploded” when they defeated him :P

Totally, like I normally don’t like long-running villains who are that powerful, but the way they very carefully always kept beating him a possibility was very smart. I’m a big fan of giving characters either a weakness or a resource cost to their powers if they’re going to be that powerful. Like with Twiggles, she’s powerful and book-smart, but she’s also lacks common sense, is very slow-witted, and prone to freezing up when caught off-guard or under pressure. If you give her time to come up with a plan and she thoroughly understands the situation she’ll cream you with god-tier sorcery, but if you jump her she panics or freezes up or if her lack of common sense gets the better of her she’ll basically defeat herself with her own plan :D

Lol he is only smart when he plans ways to mess with others, like sending the entire Mane Six on a fake friendship quest so Fluttershy isn’t there to keep him in a chain, or wait until Fluttershy is away to ruin Twilight and Cadance’s activities. When he actually needs to be useful and defeats bad guys he gets tricked like a regular 13 year old, and I think I mention the 3 villains debacle plenty enough. It’s like playing Half Life also with cheats in place but instead of actually fighting the aliens or Combine, you just go around messing with or killing friendly NPCs. I mean that’s one way to play the game, but that won’t develop and progress the story. Unless he really is pretending to be sorry just so we can gain empathy from both the in-universe characters and the fandom itself. That seems pretty smart considering it actually works.

Bill though is freaking awesome. He is actually intimidating and powerful. I mean they didn’t even defeat him how they thought they would defeat him, not with the circle of symbols like they planned. They actually had to find a workaround to take him down, actually tricking him with careful planning and caution. I don’t think even Discord was that hard to take down when he was a villain. Bill Cipher is just like multiple times superior than Discord. :P

It’s how they ended the Justice League cartoon too, with the Justice League and the Legion of Doom teaming up to fight off Darkseid and Apokolips. One of the villains even says “Hey! It’s our planet too!” when the League says they can’t trust them XD

To be fair too, it’s reasonable for him to not be smart. He’s been alive for millennia with god-tier powers so he’s probably never needed to use his wits or intelligence for anything. Like, if you’d played Doom with all the cheats in place, even for years, you’d probably not be “good” at the game in any sense of the term XD

I’m not a fan of any character with vaguely-defined powers. Like, I think that’s what people didn’t like about Rey from Star Wars, is that she can just casually gain new powers and skills out of nowhere as she needs them: she doesn’t have an interesting personality or backstory, so it’s basically impossible to care about what she does XD

They were prescient enough to give Bill a genuine weakness in that he lacks a physical form, must possess bodies to do anything in the real world, is limited by what that body can do, AND needs to make a deal with you to possess you. That he STILL managed to be a dangerous foe with that much of a limitation is really telling how much effort they put into writing his personality. And, when he DOES get into the real world with all his powers, he immediately asserts himself as the dominant force and the only reason the main characters survive at all is they’re able to take advantage of his arrogance and gloating: had he taken five seconds out of his day after gaining a physical form he could have swept through the town and killed Dipper, Mabel, and both Stans and guaranteed his victory XD

I think Bill Cipher from Gravity Falls is the best example for that kind of character, mainly because he stays a villain through and through. He can do actually do whatever he wants and uses his power to its full potential. Bill could definitely bring Discord to his knees. :P

Yes, exactly! This is why i HATE reality warpers within every part of my body! They are always either dumb or lazy. What is the point introducing a powerful character if you do not wanna use his/her powers anyway?

I mean Discord actually gets even dumber after his reformation. His original plan to separate the Mane Six was actually solid and he almost won until his pride took over and pony plot armor happened like all the time. Now it’s like “Oh no centaur guy tricked me. Didn’t see that one coming despite obvious signs!”

So that’s basically the plot of Justice League Unlimited. Darkseid and Brainiac combined is so dangerous all the other villains join the heroes to defeat him. I like that. :P

That’s what’s interesting about King Sombra, and I feel it gets unfairly overlooked because people were so upset about his weird sudden personality change. He actually learned from his failure and used a different approach. Last time he screwed around waiting to poach the Crystal Empire, believing that his old plans and traps would either slow down or outright prevent his opponents from retaliating before he could move in and take over. This time he realized waiting around like that was a mistake and took the offensive, just crushing opposition and moving forward and forcing his opponent’s to react to his attack while he identified their strengths and weaknesses and struck at them. I mean, he only lost that second time due to sheer luck on the protagonist’s part, that they’d just get lucky and suddenly gain the power to fight him out of nowhere XD

That’s the thing. Chrysalis, Tirek, and especially Discord, are so overpowered that they need to be stupid for the main characters to have any reasonable chance of standing up to them XD

And that’s the thing too, is I was only counting an absolute win like they got what they wanted without screwing themselves over. Though, technically speaking, it’s actually impossible for pretty much any villain to take out the ponies and not screw themselves over: the ponies control the day/night cycle, the seasons, and the weather: unless a villain likes ruling over a stagnant, lifeless, desolate, post-extinction-event wasteland, they’d better keep those ponies around. That would have been my plot for Season 9, is Grogar actually returned for real and his goal was the end of the world: no ponies, no monsters, nothing alive, absolute end of all things. He’s a walking extinction event that can’t be reasoned with. Chrysalis, Cozy, and Tirek realize this and ultimately side with the ponies against him, reasoning they can’t conquer a dead world. Then play off of how, for as evil as those other villains are, they actually have some depth to them like Tirek’s sense of honor, Cozy’s beliefs of friendship, and Chrysalis actually having a sense of humor and using her shapeshifting for fun. Like, don’t redeem them but just give them a little bit of nuance that shows there’s a little more to them than just one-track power-hungry villains :D

All the methods that involve killing are completely forbidden by the great lord that is TV rating and Hasbro Studios. Literally no one, not even Discord, can oppose them. :P

But if Tirek actually did that and left Discord alive. Discord really almost had the Mane Six and Fluttershy killed because he has abandonment issue lol.

And Sombra kind of did that but he pretended to be defeated in the Crystal Empire. Imagine he went back to take over Crystal Empire after mind controlling the entire Equestria instead of staying there like a target.

The thing is, Discord is still pretty dumb for trusting a random stranger who looks shadier than a drug dealer, than the one mare and her friends who actually give him a chance, and then acts like “Oh no, the obvious villain who doesn’t care about anyone betrayed and took away my power. I should have trusted the group of ponies who literally defeated me with friendship in the past!”. His stupidity happened again when he gathered the 3 villains. They literally caused such a big problem at one point but he never even thought maybe, just maybe the villains he summoned may be behind it, that they’re now free, out and about and that may be dangerous. He never even teleported back to their lair to check. His universal power is really worthless if he doesn’t know how to use it properly.

And I mean Starlight would technically “win” if she actually ripped that scroll in half. She would trap herself in the past and in a world that would eventually become a wasteland. It’s not really a win but more like a suicide bombing kind of deal. Good thing she decided to not do that by herself. That shows just how good Starlight Glimmer actually is. :P

Cozy was definitely one of the smarter antagonists in the series, which is pretty telling just how thick a lot of them are. Potentially the smartest, though I think Season 3 pre-resurrection Sombra was smarter. Though, to be fair, all the rest of the villains have power sets that would allow them to just sweep the ponies unchallenged if they were smart and didn’t screw around. To wit, and only counting their first appearance:

-Nightmare Moon could have just killed the Mane Six instead of screwing around, since she is apparently more than a match for Celestia sans the Elements of Harmony.

-Discord could have just teleported the Mane Six, Celestia, and Luna into space, or turned them into cookies, or shot them 50,000 years into the future, or dumped them in a pocket dimension, or basically anything since he’s basically a god.

-Queen Chrysalis could have kept up her “I’m just bitchy Cadance” act and not teleported Twiggles to the caves, ie the ONE place Twilight could have gone that would allow her to foil Chrysalis’s plans.

-King Sombra could have just left the Crystal Empire and attacked the rest of Equestria, forcing the Mane Six to choose between guarding the Crystal Empire or abandoning it to stop him from killing Celestia and Luna: they can’t guard both kingdoms at once.

-Lord Tirek could have not kept his end of the bargain and just killed the Mane Six after he got what he wanted, since the ponies seemed to do literally everything in their power to let him win until like the last 5 seconds.

-Storm King could have either given Tempest Shadow what she wanted or killed her on the spot, depending on whether or not he suspected she’d betray him the second she had her horn back.

-Cozy Glow, once defeated, could have turned on the waterworks and claimed all she wanted was power so everyone would be her friend. Twilight would have handed her the Starlight treatment so fast it’d blown her freckles off and she’d now be in a position where she’d basically have unlimited attempts to stab them in the back since from then on out anything bad she did would be written off as a simple mistake on her way to reformation.

The only two who reasonably couldn’t have won, that is they were actually out-matched due to circumstances beyond their reasonable control, were Starlight and the Pony of Shadows: the former was beaten by genuine wit on the part of the Mane Six, and the latter lacked the power to fight back against both the Elements and the Pillars :P

Oh no Twilight has evolved! Backwards.
