Because there’s no life in Equestria anymore. All she can conjure, are images of what once was.
 
The setting reminded me of an Italian animated short (from Allegro Non Troppo) about a cat walking through his old dilapidated house, seeing images of the regular day-to-day events that used to fill it.

This whole scene, and this part in particular, was just so wonderfully dark and haunting. Especially the illusory ponies she made; something about their design and empty eyes, as well as how they were dancing happily even in the desolation around them, just put me on edge.
