for the render I did here I had over 69,000 parent hairs, 5,840,399 total hair strands. I think I was able to fit it all on my 1080ti, but I rendered in 2.8 with GPU+CPU turned on, I think it took 16 hours or something, but I can’t recall 100%

I actually do have the eyes rigged to bones that track a target, and there’s supposed to be an additional constraint that prevents them from going too cross-eyed when looking forward, but I guess I forgot to re-enable it before this render. Yay.
And I shall look into using more hairs. Not sure how much my GPU will appreciate it though :P
I would suggest using more parent hairs, it stinks having to do, but I always found the result better for my fur. The length and roughness is spot on though
Also I always use a rotation bone to drive the eyes off from center for horses/ponies. It keeps that cross eyed look at bay. Horse pupils are actually angled off to the side IRL. That’s why it looks more natural. I set 1 bone as a parent and use modifiers to copy the rotation to the eyes.
