Flutes, like all musical instruments, are expensive. Woodwind instruments in particular due to the pads are damaged if inserted into any orifice other than the mouth, as they’re only designed to withstand saliva. It’s also not great for the metal on any instrument, and silver-plated instruments may never recover from it. The keys or valves can be damaged by doing that, and those aren’t designed to by in direct contact with orifices. Besides that, at band camp there’s not nearly time for that sort of thing. It’s spent either rehearsing, getting water, or eating lunch. You don’t stay overnight unless it’s a drum corps rehearsal camp, spring training, or tour, and there you have far less free time than at high school band camp and absolutely no one would even consider abusing their instrument that way at a drum corps.
