The run-down: Discord, born a newt in a lab. A genetically-chimeric newt created as a precursor to more advanced genetic work. An alicorn named Fyre-Flye is created a few years later.
 
On January 19 2038, Unix time_t rolls over. Suddenly, the apocalypse hits. It’s an apocalypse of magic. Everything is going screwy. Humans break out into nuclear war. (One bomb becomes the Lich, but that’s another story.) Discord absorbs a helluva lot of magic and becomes the god of chaos. He revels in the chaos as humanity destroys itself. Fyre-Flye manages to stop Discord, seal him at the center of the Earth, and just barely hold the Earth together while Thaumageddon rocks it. New dimensions bubble up, new magical creatures come into being. Mutation and mischief and blood. Soon, the apocalypse is over, and the Earth begins to flourish again. Fyre-Flye become trapped in one of the D’ni ages she loves to write so much. The Land of Ooo comes about. Finn is born in 3036 CE.
 
Discord sleeps at the center of the Earth, leeching magic for a thousand years until he rises in the Land of Ooo to take over. Finn and Jake try to stop him but they fail. Discord tears up the linking book to Fyre-Flye’s age. Discord reigns for a couple thousand years. Marceline finds the scattered pages of the linking book and rescues Fyre-Flye, who defeats Discord once more, this time turning him to stone.
 
Then Fyre-Flye uplifts various ungulates across the world to sapience in a gradual process. Horses pass through a level of intelligence such that they become the Houhyhnhnms and are accidentally visited by Gulliver coming from 1710 over the Rainbow Bridge. There are still humanoid creatures (the yahoos) but they are deformed and degenerate. A few hundred thousand years later, the society of Dream Valley (MLP G1) is formed. Megan Williams arrives over the Rainbow Bridge from 1984 CE and continues to visit for about three years. Then without her help after she leaves, G1 society collapses.
 
The Flutterponies become the Changelings after an ancient warhead is activated. There’s severe climate change.
 
Later, the Great Blizzard happens. The tribes found Equestria. Fyre-Flye gives birth to Celestia and Luna. Fyre-Flye becomes the Elements of Harmony. There’s a thousand years of harmony. Then Celestia and Luna banish Discord and Sombra. Celestia banishes Nightmare Moon. Then there’s another thousand years of peace. Then Nightmare Moon returns and you know the rest.
 
Tl;dr it’s Earth all along.

FYI Discord didn’t cause the apocalypse, it just made him Discord. Before that he was a newt in a lab. The magical apocalypse and the subsequent nuclear war baptized him into the god of chaos.

That’s weird and sad at the same time.
