Some background info (includes big adventure spoilers for Curse of the Statuettes): According to the adventure background, when Discord was terrorizing Equestria, the ponies living in the Badlands moved underground to get away from him, building their own city and naming it Umberfoal. They basically put themselves into suspended animation with the intent to awaken when Discord was deposed, but they never did. Instead, the magic began to leak out and started affecting others throughout the kingdom. It’s up to the party to save Equestria.
