Well really her death is still touching and emotional. The build up to it was nicely executed and the reason to her death was to st the tone of the show while the first 2 episodes are just to trick the vier to think they are watching just another Magical Girl show (with almost every single cliche on the book). And really more than 12 episodes would had been to much. The story is told perfectly. And Mami (the girl that you are talking about)still gets screen time even after death and she had a Manga and big role in the movie.
 
On another note Madoka Magica is the perfect anime IMO. (inspire after a German novel so that explain the dark tone.) The movie on the other hand is both the most horrific yet beautiful thing ever. I hate to love and I love to hate it. Every single moment of it was pure awesome yet I get depress just thinking about it.
 
Dude just watch it is not as bad as you are making it sound and the ending more than make the ride worth it. Is not uber dark. It has dark tones yes but most of them you have to do actual research and there is zero gore and anything really violent is off screen. The movie on the other hand will make you question life for an entire week and you won’t be able to smile during that entire time. You will spend days moping and looking at the celling. You will feel depress, confuse, fill with hate, and the urge to punch a ferret pr rabbit in the face. But somehow you will want more Madoka.

“Chapter?” Is that one of those “call the episodes something other than episodes” things, or did the manga only have 12 chapters as well?

I wasn’t actually complaining; I was merely expressing surprise that the show was only 12 episodes, as well as stating that I tend to steer clear of shows like this.

Yep, it is. In episode 3, Mami had her head bitten off by a monster.

Also, I’m assuming that the missing head in this image is a reference to how the character in question (I… actually forgot the character’s name; look, I know a lot of details about it despite not having seen it, but character names is not one of those details) died…

…There were only twelve episodes?
 
…I mean, I know that’s pretty common in anime, but I didn’t actually know this (since after hearing so much of it and Urobutcher’s reputation, I pretty much decided to stay the f*** away from this and any of his work. Even Kamen Rider Gaim).
 
And I suppose that COULD make the character death in episode 3 (despite not having seen it, even I know about THAT particularly nasty surprise) a bit less jarring, since it’s technically 25% of the way into the series…
