That’s probably the most logical interpretation.

I think the prophecy is dual. The actual stars freed Nightmare from the moon and then Twilight and her friends (The big starburst and the smaller stars) freed Luna from Nightmare.
No Twilight did not help Nightmare moon escape,in my headcannon Luna is the prisoner within the dark force of Nigthmare moon and she is freed from her parasite by the “stars”(Twilight and co). Of course this is presuming one subscribes that luna was a victim of a dark power(which is heavily suggested in the comics) and how exactly Nigthmare moon escaped from the moon can be anything from a limit in the power of the elements to some crazy stuff with Nightmare Moon being freed by Time traveling Future Princess Twilight to ensure the progression of Events to create “Harmony”…
@Antonyourknee
Twilight did nothing to contribute to Nightmare Moon’s escape. She cannot be the “stars” of the prophecy. The stars are the four stars that converged on the moon. That much is clear from when the stars disappeared into the moon and the mare in the moon vanished immediately after.
The nature of the stars’ involvement is where I must begin to speculate.
Speculation One: As Luna has dominion over the stars as well as the moon, with what little power she retained in her imprisonment she was able to coax the stars into position and draw enough power from them to escape the moon.
Speculation Two: Astrology is real in Equestria and the alignments of the four stars freed Nightmare Moon through no action of her own.
In either case, the process was centuries long which provided more than enough time for Celestia to calculate the date of Nightmare Moon’s return and have all her pieces in place to meet her.
I’m of the belief that the prophecy was referring to Twilight as the “stars”turning that message of dread into one of hope.
Maybe it meant Twilight, she has stars on her butt…
@Antonyourknee
The stars freed Nightmare Moon from the moon. The Mane Six with their elements (though mainly Twilight) freed Luna from Nightmare Moon.
The interesting part is the stars. Did the prophecy refer to the alignment of the four stars around the moon that somehow aided Nightmare Moon’s escape or were the “stars” entities with whom Nightmare Moon made a deal? Maybe both.
Twilight did it,she freed the prisoner.
Celestia didn’t, the stars did.
“And the stars shall aid in her escape.”
Why did I bring you back from the moon again?
