I’m pretty sure they have to be boinking for it to happen. When Gleaming went from 4 to 5 foals, it was because Cadence was super horny and just shoved a massive amount of magic into Gleaming while both of them were turned on.
We don’t know yet for sure, but it’s probably a combination of Gleaming needing a minimum amount of magic reserves,
currently engaging in sexytimes, and Cadence dumping magic wholesale into her. Maybe once Gleaming realizes that she can turn love and magic into a living being, she’ll ascend to become an alicorn? Place your bets!

so is the implication that every time they exceed a certain amount of energy with the magic infusions, the baby count goes up? For awhile it sat at five, then with this last one it shot to six
I forgot just how fast she got big. It’s crazy looking back from where she is in the story right now.
I do love the detailing on how she’s grown. The straps biting into her belly and bum are top unf.
