I think that it not fitting is what fits. Combined with the strict, soldierly attitude, it’s a sign that the divergences are getting worse; compared to cyborg Dash a couple timelines back, a lot less of the “real” Dash found its way into this one. Cyborg Dash has a helmet too (pilot’s helmet in her case), but her hairstyle is closer to normal Dash’s.

I’m not sure why people are analyzing this so much. A short mane just seems practical for a pony that wears a heavy armored helmet all day, and a buzzcut is the quickest way to cut hair.

How about a fight between Crystal War Rainbow Dash and Nightmare Takeover Rainbow Dash!:D

Good point. It’s her normal mane that fits her the best. I was just looking at the buzzcut as fitting her from a “rough/tough gal perspective, but it is indeed a bit too much. That style is much uglier on her than her normal mane style.

Hm, I actually strongly disagree with the idea that it fits her personality. This kind of haircut is more ‘functional’ rather than having any actual appeal, and honestly I find it pretty, well, not good. No offense to people who have a mohawk or something, but it’s not exactly what comes to mind when I think of particularly pleasing hairstyles, especially on characters like ponies or anime characters, where nice looking hair is pretty widespread. It’s like a military buzzsaw cut honestly, not exactly the most charming thing ever, though if some people out there like it for whatever reason, then suit yourself I suppose.
 
Her normal hair in the show fits her very well, as while she’s got plenty of tomboyish traits, she also has a lot of femininity too. Her normal haircut looks nice and fits pretty well with that (though I can imagine a lot of others she’d look nice with too, obviously). I don’t think she’d ever take a haircut like the one in this picture out of choice, though.

Funny, Dash is the only one of the Mane Six that I’ve always figured for totally straight.

If I recall, some of the other guards had more batpony features, like tufted ears. I don’t see any screencaps of that, yet.
