That’s it exactly; most of Rarity’s episodes and a lot of her individual scenes are all about how insecure she is even once she does gain some kind of popularity. Honestly, given how fleeting the adoration of Equestrians in general and Ponyvillians in particular tends to be, I can’t even say she’s overreacting to be constantly worried about it. Popular opinion turns like a pinwheel in Horse Country.

While the world of MLP FiM isn’t directly comparable with high school life, I don’t understand how anyone could see Rarity as a typical “popular” person from some cliché high school movie. In those movies these popular people are usually assholes for some reason. Is Rarity an asshole? No, she’s not. More importantly, Rarity isn’t popular. Huge part of her character is that she really wants to be popular but is struggling with it. Even all ponies in Ponyville don’t know who she is or what she does and Rarity herself is shocked to learn that Sapphire Shores had actually heard about her.In Sweet and Elite Rarity gets her chance to be popular. Not because of her skills as a dressmaker but because of popular pony Fancypants. Even then Rarity fears that she loses her quickly gained popularity if the other ponies learn where she is from. Basically, if we really start comparing ponies to high school movies, Rarity is one of the “nerds”. An unpopular kid who really wants to be popular.
 
When it comes to disliking or even hating some characters, there’s many reasons for that and it’s just childish to say that others dislike your favorite pony because of some stupid reason where you want to make them look bad. Surely there can be reasons like that behind it but come on! We can’t all like same things. We like things for different reasons and we also dislike things for different reasons. There isn’t just one thing, one “correct answer” to this.
 
That said, seeing who uploaded this, this was most likely done just to get some shit started and apparently it worked seeing we are all here now writing stuff.

Most popular people in face-to-face social situations are popular for a reason; they tend to be likeable and charismatic. There’s just a distressingly common personality type– and if you went to a school, anywhere ever, you know exactly what I mean– that sees their own lack of popularity as some kind of grave injustice, and thus auto-hates anyone who is popular for usurping a spotlight they feel they deserved. It’s why “revenge of the nerds” type movies are so, uh… popular. The actual popular-kid-as-asshole almost always has their popularity confined to a specific clique or social group, where they can accumulate sycophants and wannabes who have similar interests.

Pretty much this and this of course applies to all characters. When we don’t like some character for some reason, we stop apying more attention to them and in return, pay more attention to characters we like. Thus cahracters we like seem more deep than the ones we dislike. It’s no wonder why people have much more to say about their favorite cahracters. It’s not uncommon behaviour but way too easily people think that when they don’t care about something, no one else does either.
