Bradbury’s dystopia was a world where people gave up reading because mass media technology made it too easy to just watch the news and entertainments rather than spend the time and mental effort to read them. Books were being seized and destroyed not to suppress ideas, but to force the “old fashioned” hold-outs to embrace the new way of living.

Well, the book was written during the McCarthy era. Later, Bradbury described it as a denunciation of how mass media weaken interest in literature and creative thought.
