Normally, I try not to trace. I usually only do it when I just can’t get a pose or proportions that I’m satisfied with.  
And even then, I only do that as an absolute last resort.

If I can give you an advice, to improve as an artist, is to not use bases. Use references, plenty of them, but don’t ever trace over them. Analyse them, draw on the side, learn from your mistakes, but don’t use already fabricated stuff to get what you want, I don’t think it’ll ever help you to improve.

Mistakes happen, and as the commissioner of one of the images that was being asked about, I think it’s reasonable for them to be interested in finding out. I’m just glad that we resolved this quickly.

You’re welcome - if you run into this again in the future, it seems that it’s often best if something was referenced or traced or if a base was used, to just point out what the reference was, to avoid these kinds of mistakes - especially for very common poses.

I’m not proud to say I trace things every so often, but normally, it’s just to get poses and proportions as accurate as possible.  
Having been a victim of art theft myself, I would never steal art from someone else.

Thanks for clearing this up. People keep coming after me with accusations of stealing that other person’s work, but you seem to know just where I got the pose.  
And as popular as that pose is, I’m surprised so few people didn’t realize where it actually came from.

That’s where I got the pose, and it’s where the artist of the picture you linked probably got the pose too.

This image does not appear to be based on Sugguk’s work, as alleged. The images don’t match in any way other than that the pose is similar. Instead, it appears to be based on a screencap of Twilight Sparkle from A Canterlot Wedding.
 
We don’t tag images that are based on screenshots from the show as “Traces”, any more than we would tag vector art as a “Trace”.

Whether this is based on a screenshot from the show or not, comments like that are not really contributing, nor does it help the artist learn anything. If you see something that you think is traced, please report it - please don’t make allegations like that before you have all the information.

Here is our internal policy regarding tracing. I’ll be contacting each of you via PMs to discuss your allegations. In the meantime, if you have evidence of this being a trace, please either PM me or report it with a link to the image that you believe was traced - until we know this image is a trace it would be nice if we don’t mob the artist or smear their name, in case some of you are wrong.
