While the show does operate on the highly simplified “1k years ago” for most things that happened a long time ago, as an armchair history enthusiast I deeply appreciate the concepts laid out here an in other attempts to flesh out Equestria beyond ‘magic talking fairy ponies’.

I recently started brainstorming an idea that takes place in a ponified version of Ancient Rome, in particular Pompeii. What started as a fairly cut and dry idea has ballooned to a incredibly complex brain storm.

so here comes a thing i’ve been thinking on making this: how can we; ourselve really trust our own timeline and history of events. from the ancient greeks, the gauls and the druids, the medieval times, renaissance… until we really have written and dated documentation that’s exploitable, and the hardest challenge: having a neutral point of view, not just “Ye Hath Defheathed And Impaleth Ye Olde Enemeyh In thy name Of The Lorde For A Thousanth Of Yearfs”, let’s be honest even today it’s a pain in the ass to find the truth on the last century’s wars and who was who, and how it differs from what we learn in history class.

You have to remember that Equestria operates on little kid’s logic. And small children don’t really grasp the passage of time very well, certainly not long periods well beyond their personal experience. So while pony historians have probably written a lot about events in Equestria’s past, they would be pretty hazy about the timing of them.
 
It’s not unlike medieval artists who portrayed ancient characters in contemporary dress–their distinction between the “past” and the “present” wasn’t as great as we make it.

I was just being a general ass with my comment. But how can you assume pony civilization keeps no records of the past? The Crystal Empire I can understand, with Sombra’s intervention. But there’s no reason all of pony society should be considered to “start history” at the Sisters War event.

Ponies have no concept of historical time. Anything outside of living memory happened “1000 years ago”. Thus it’s next to impossible to chart a timeline for Equestria; we can only guess at when certain events occured. For example, the defeat of Sombra and the first defeat of Discord occurred after the war referenced in the “Hearth’s Warming Eve” play, but before Luna’s madness, attempted coup and banishment. But the actual timing of these events is anyone’s guess.

I thought the time frames were”at least 100 years ago” and “next Tuesday”, after which point the time stream is re-referenced to “last Tuesday” as everything before it is a lie created by the constantly shattering and reforming time construct…

Interesting breakout, though the fact that the Crystal Empire/Sombra stuff doesn’t following with being “a thousand years” ago (he was defeated by both sisters)

This is silly. Everyone knows that the timeline only consists of “now” and “1000 years ago”.

I’ll wait for the flag to change at the end of S4 when Twilight rules over Equestria. That image many said was fake is starting to make more and more sense now.
