I would need an editor, since I believe my biggest weakness when it comes to writing is proper grammar and sentence structure. That and I tend to have character be more then a bit wordy… as even when being praised for my ability of roleplaying Princess Celestia on the fan site MLP Forums I feel I have her say a bit too much.

Welcome to the club! I joined 2 years ago, but it’s always nice seeing new faces.

When it comes to writing fanfics, it’s never too late to start. Like everything, writing is something that takes practice and feedback, so producing anything at all gives you experience to be a better writer. People who land their first fanfic in the featured box are few (turns out I’m one of those people), so don’t feel pressured for perfection immediately.

Thankfully it seems, yourself included, it seems there are those reasonable fans who have not jumped on the “Hate Flash Sentry” train/bandwagon.

I would myself write such a fanfiction, but I don’t have much confidence when it comes to writing and have yet to write a fanfiction of any sort… though I have plenty of ideas and stories in my head.

I like this, it is very cute. I hope the fandom moves away from bashing Flash Sentry and actually allow the poor stallion some character development like that of Derpy, Vinyl Scratch, Octavia, Lyra, and Bon Bon. More, I actually feel the young guard and Twilight could make for a good couple.

Point by point:
  • Just because opinion on something is doesn’t mean it’s always permanent. Unpopular characters being developed more and becoming liked happens often enough that there’s a trope for it. Hell, Cadance was initially hated for being an obvious marketing ploy, Shining was hated again, for introducing a significant character so late in the show (why the hell hasn’t Twilight mentioned her brother for almost 2 seasons?), and the New Lunar Republic was so popular back in ‘11 when people found it fun to make fun of Celestia. I think you massively overestimate how many people would be hostile to the ship; even if half the people who liked this picture only did it for the art, that’s still more than twice the amount of people who like the ship than those who hate it.
  • What’s so unforgivable about being friendly and respectful and willing to take a chance on some strange woman? Sure, Flash (the human, at least) is popular, but in my experience people are popular either those who are friends/friendly with everyone or bullies who convince others they’re cool because they bully the weak. Your hatred of Flash for being the former makes me think you’d rather the later. Being nice isn’t a weakness.
  • Fun fact: Flash is average-sized. Twilight is taller than the average pony now. So, “short.” Flash really would be ‘normal,’ an everyman in a world where ponies blast giant centaurs through the ground, and the ‘normal’ Shining Armor is a powerful mage that can cast a continual shield around an entire city for days with only minor discomfort. You sure about that Shining Armor reaction? Fans of him were unenthusiastic when their resident cool big bro, someone who radiates confidence and handsome, was reduced to an insecure nerd to enable a “plucky loser gets the amazing girl” plot. In fact, that even proves my point further, as somepony who seemed a clear-cut archetype had a surprising amount of hidden depths and character development.
  • Apart from the fact that you’re assuming the brief slice we see of Flash (pony Flash, I mean) is the entirety of his existence, only Big Mac fits the claim you made. When Soarin’ appeared in S1E26, he was also a “cool”(wonderbolt=instant celebrity) and “handsome”(he’s the dreamboat Wonderbolt recruitment posters) guy who had a liking for pie, his flaw in being too forgiving didn’t arise until 3 years later in S4E10. Bulk Biceps is actually a case of how not to introduce flaws a character, as he went from competent flyer in Hurricane Wondershy to good enough to be accepted to the Wonderbolts Academy in the same-titled episode to as horrible a flyer as Fluttershy. You’re using examples of characters whose developments came years after their introduction and then saying another character doesn’t deserve the same, which is pretty hypocritical.
  • A visual cameo is just that: a visual cameo. Just a way to show a character is still a part of the story, same way how Gilda, Cheese Sandwich, Octavia, Twilight’s parents, and so on appeared in “Equestria Games.” Expecting those brief appearances to significantly develop that character is asking the impossible. And, wwwwhat? He saw the awkward princess who he bumped into a few months ago and breaks his stoic guard composure to give a smile of recognition and somehow you think that makes him look like a douche? That’s grasping at straws.

    Again, I’m not disagreeing with you. Suddenly introducing Flash next season and being kissy kissy would be a “Very Bad Thing”(tm). What I would look forward to would if Flash were introduced as a recurring character, not intrusive and with interesting interactions, and maybe, just maybe asking for a proper date at the end of the season. Bad writing is always bad, good written stuff is good.

    I actually ship Twilight with a lot of ponies, so your last comment doesn’t rustle any jimmies if that’s what you were aiming for. Doctorlight, Caralight, Derpylight, Twijack, Twimac… I can fit it, I can ship it. I just like Flashlight a bit more because it’s closest to canon. I’m only offput with the Twilight/Spiderman thing because I’m critical of crossover/alternate universe shipping in general, plus it’s probably someone with way too much money trying to force a meme. Character-wise, I’d still ship it.

@Poptard
Maybe you are right but I don’t think Flash should be used anymore for few simple facts:

  • Introduction as forced romantic interest for main character - Shipping should be strictly done by the fandom, not introduced when people develop their own pairings. Using Flash equals using him as love interest for Twilight which fuels hate and it won’t ever die because 90% of the fandom won’t become flashlight shipper just because Flash shows up.
  • Introduction as cool and handsome dude - Why must it be once again some ‘cool’ and ‘handsome’ dude perfect for girls? Are people so shallow today that they must once again be encountering this propaganda of “cool and handsome is okay, other guys who don’t fit this description aren’t”?.
    Why can’t it be more like normal guy, example of Accel World, where main hero is short and fat? Even Shining Armor was portrayed in comics as nerd which made people like him (and he was hated when he was shown as cool dude). Seriously, I can’t even see Flash as hero character because he is portrayed as too flawless, a true hero never has it easy and is awesome because he tries in spite of hard life…
    Flash isn’t cool at all for me because of it, he got spot as LI for main heroine while he doesn’t even deserve it neither for his actions and neither for possible chemistry…he just is.
  • His ‘being perfect’ character - All of the male ponies (Save for Shining Armor first appearance) so far had their flaw introduced when they were shown. Big Mac? Doesn’t talk too much. Soarin? Lacks backbone. Bulk Biceps? Can’t fly too well. This list goes on with every single male character but Flash is exception of this rule. He shows up in the movie which would be perfectly fine without him, is cool all the time, saves Twilight who is suddenly damsel in distress and gets dance with her and because he is cool he dances like she does. His cameo was a chance to build him up but instead was also irritating… he goes out of the train, smiles at princess for no reason (she doesn’t even acknowledge his existence). Once again it speaks about him “Look, I’m cool and smile for no reason.” What did it even serve? Nothing.

    I know you want to give him a fair chance and I won’t say you are wrong with it but I believe that one shouldn’t poke turd with a stick. Flash had his three chances already, one in movie and two in cameos and if writers wanted to give him more, they would, because ultimately its their show, they don’t need to care for older fans but little girls who want their ‘Ken for Barbie doll’ and his toys would be bought if they forcefully made him official LI.

    Remember all of those Perter Parker/Twilight pics that annoy people around? Between this and Flashlight I would chose this because a main heroine can only be with a character who has at least equal amount of development in the show. Flash would need whole season for himself to ever be acknowledged and it won’t happen. Let it be fanfic stuff.

My argument never refuted the fact. It is true. My argument is that Flash is an underdeveloped character due to factors beyond his canon character, who is passable by himself. Your vitriol should be directed at the writers who elected to include him and do completely waste a character. The point I was getting at with “potential” was because we simply don’t know a lot about Flash, and I personally find it interesting to see what could happen, either in fan works or future show developments. I’m thinking of Cadance here: back when she was introduced, she was literally a marketing scheme to cash in on the Royal Wedding, and since then she’s proven rather awesome. In case of characters like this, I’d say apathy of their current condition is a logically acceptable sentiment, it’s only hatred of them despite doing nothing besides existing which earns my ire.

Your romantic tastes are your opinion, and I’m not going to say you’re wrong. I just consider the Adorkable route the logical path Twilight would do, considering she’s proven herself as adorkable before and has shown no prior experience in dealing with romance or crushes (really, how else could her romance go?). Just by “adorkable,” I just mean acting cute and occasionally doing nerdy things (like regular), with any amount of adventure or whatever along sides. In this day and age, pretty much everything’s been done already, so a mark of originality is taking an interesting new route to the expected end. The recent finale is a good example: it fit the formula from most of the openings and finales (evil villain returns/sneaks in, eventually all hope is lost, then the magical macguffin comes in and fixes everything), and it was still amazing. That doesn’t mean everything should be stereotyped and predictable, I mean you shouldn’t hate something just because it seems “unoriginal,” and we’ve barely seen enough of Flash (20 mins screentime) to fully decide.

Well, as long as it’s well written, it’d be interesting at least. I’ve read a fanfic like that, but it descended into just typical author hating on a character they don’t like, which is why I usually avoid fics like that. I prefer my Flash as a nice, helpful dude with a surprising amount of hidden depth and cunning.

@HollowedIchigo
Hey now, we’re being civil taking about a poni kissing other poni, so there’s no reason to add insults as fuel that’d start a flamewar.

You do realize your argument doesn’t change one simple fact: Flash Sentry IS forced and bland content that was designed to be ken for barbie which is why he is hated. Doesn’t matter if they put effort or not at this point, we know what we got and people don’t like it. Facts as of today are: He is bland and boring to boot. In fanfiction MAYBE he is okay but that’s only in fanfiction and not in every fanfic mind you so it shouldn’t be mixed. Fanfic Flash =/= Show Flash.

Twilight romance adorkable? Please…its lame and cliche, we have exact same stuff in W.I.T.C.H. with Will Vandom and Matt and other disney media as well, its nothing original and this whole show is build up about breaking stereotypes and cliche…this is why people like it and why its so popular in the first place. If I wanted to see cheap romance I would take any disney movie which is why I hate Flash, because if he is this nice guy then he undermines what I like in the show… Pictures with them cute? Sure, whenever I see them, I have this cute urge to vomit.

Want to know what would redeem Flash for me? Make him being evil Sombra after he lost his power, he stayed in crystal empire to be close to the heart and tries to get close to Twilight by casting charm spell on her <- THAT would be epic twist for the storyline and would build up two underdeveloped characters at once.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

@Background Pony #6E02
I guess I can narrow it down to two main reasons. One, I supposed I’m biased towards the underdog. From Kaidan Alenko to Anthony Carmine to a lot of indie games to background ponies before they got popular, if people lump on hate or apathy towards someone, I take a closer look and decide they really deserve better treatment.

You say Flash ended up as an underwhelming character, I say he was designed as underwhelming. He never really had a chance, entering a 65-episode long cartoon in a spin-off movie not focused around him at all and romancing the main character to boot. The writers didn’t even try (Meghan actually referred to him as ‘Dreamy Cutebottom’ so he wasn’t exactly given the best treatment), and lazy writing is a huge pet peeve, from Celestia’s worfing do Pinkie’s flanderization.

Next is, well, interesting potential. Twilight’s new to romance and with a crush to boot (She blushed right down to her unicorn horn). Adorkable romance is amazing, and since I don’t ship the Mane 6 with each other (FRIENDSHIP), it’s the closest to canon. What’s next for writing for Flash; if Twilight’s looking at him romantically, what would make him husbando material? There’s a lot of ways to develop him from what we know (nice guy, helpful, relaxed, Royal Guard), which is part of the appeal. ANd as a side not, most pictures of him alone or with shipped with Twilight are damn cute.

I guess you can say that neither of us are interested in Flash Sentry as he is, but I’m just interested in what potential in story and shipping terms he has, and want Flash to be actually given a fair chance.

Aww, crap, I wrote an essay again. Good to know college life is helpful for something.
Background Pony #31C5
@Background Pony #6E02
Agreed, no other pony receives hate like Flash does because he was forced into the fandom like this ‘perfect and cool’ guy. I dislike forced stuff and Flash who is the epitome of it is as cool to me as water in sewers.
Background Pony #0445
@Poptard
That’s fine. I understand some don’t desire to look past Flash’s flaws, and as long as you’re not a dick about it and can make a logical argument, I see don’t mind at all.

Well, that’s my issue. I don’t see what substance Flash Sentry has other than flaws; I don’t even see many flaws to begin with, just the three big ones: flat, forced, and overly blatantly “hip but good guy”.
