After a quick battle Human twi lies on the floor in the throne room without any hands and with Sunset ready to kill.
 
EMPEROR IRIS QUINN: GOOD! kill her, kill her now, fulfil your destiny and take that posers place at my side.  
SUNSET: I shouldn’t.  
EMPEROR IRIS QUINN: Do it.
 
Sunset strikes.
 
EMPEROR IRIS QUINN: You did well Sunset, she was to evil to be kept alive.  
SUNSET: Yes my master.

True, but she met the other one first, and that was a life-altering experience.
 
It’ll be hard for that not to color her view on this other one.

but isn’t she the original in this world? if anything, pony twilight is the imitation of her in this world.

Perhaps for being a poor imitation of her great friend? And competing against her?

It’s not a huge difference, but Twilight’s right breast is demarcated. This was never the case in the first movie, but it happened a few times in Rainbow Rocks (most notably when Sunset Shimmer is in the kitchen in Pinkie Pie’s house). I’m guessing they changed their minds on this element of character design, and it’s going to pop up more and more in new designs.
 
Another obvious change is they’ve moved a lot of the designs towards skinny ankles. Sweetie Drops goes from thick ankles in Rainbow Rocks to skinny ankles in Life is a Runway.
 
There are probably a lot of other similar design choices they’ve changed at this point. It’s not any one thing, but it adds up.

Yeah just like the show, they seem to have mastered the complete new puppets and are finally able to make them look more alive.

maybe we’ve gotten used to it so it’s not as jarring as the earlier installments?

Don’t know why, but the art style looks slightly different than before.
