We knew from as far back as when the movie was first announced that it would be a grand adventure largely focused on the mane 6 traveling beyond the borders of Equestria. The kind of background pony interaction we see in the slice-of-life episodes in the show was always going to be limited. After all, how often do we see the mane 6 interacting with background ponies or the background ponies fighting alongside the mane 6 in the two-parters? Now admittedly, I was still a bit bummed we didn’t get to see very many Equestrian ponies taking action in the movie, but that was hardly a deal-breaker for me.
 
That’s fair, but I really would have liked a few regulars to get a few lines in during the festival preparations before Tempest shows up or during the ending once the fight is over. I didn’t expect a lot of focus on them, but it does bother me that they don’t even seem to have tried. I feel like they’re intentionally ignoring one of the show’s biggest assets.
 
On a related note, I’m really disappointed that Applejack and Fluttershy got so little focus. To be fair, I can see how once could claim it’s justified for Fluttershy to keep her head down, but Applejack? The whole “grand adventure” thing should have given the rough-and-tumble cowgirl a chance to shine. Hell, they were in a desert town full of crooks and lowlifes, an Old West-style action scene before the M6 get bailed out by Capper would have been very appropriate.

Okay, dramatization aside: I think that the one thing that the movie had over the show is the presentation. The animation quality is way superior in the movie than anything else in seven seasons of the show and you gotta be blind to not recognize that. The film has its flaws, yes, but looks ain’t one.
 
The movie’s animation is certainly more polished, but the simpler visuals of the show do have their own charm. In certain instances, I prefer the show’s style. I know this won’t be a popular opinion, but I felt I had to say it.

I personally enjoyed all the new characters. I just wished we could have spent more time learning about each them. The movie honestly could have done much more to take full advantage of them, but instead it just wasted a lot of their potential. The only new character I could probably do without is Grubber, but even he was (slightly) better than most comic reliefs we get in kid’s movies nowadays.

The new characters themselves were fine; they were all plenty unique and charming.
 
We’ll have to agree to disagree there. Most of them I’m ambivalent towards, and some I feel like the movie would have been better without. Grubber and the Storm King, perhaps predictably, are my two biggest problems in this regard, but I also found Capper a great deal less suave than he was meant to be.

The princesses being sidelined is a problem with the show too.
 
When I said “dutifully showing up to get their flanks handed to them again”, I meant it’s become a routine for them and I’m kind of used to it. My actual problem was that nobody else even got that, and the show’s charming and vibrant supporting cast was basically reduced to glorified set dressing.

Way to generalize the fandom. I loved the movie and have seen it who knows how many times, but even I have my criticisms with it.

What ultimately hindered them was the pacing (which is probably my biggest criticism of the film); the movie didn’t dedicate enough time to properly exploring these individuals.

Don’t generalize. As far as I’m concerned, the movie lacked several of the key ingredients central to the show’s charm. In particular, other than the Princesses dutifully showing up to get their flanks handed to them again, there’s basically no use of the show’s supporting cast. Even the CMC, who’ve been around since the beginning and get their own episodes on a regular basis, were reduced to background ponies. All to make room for celebrity guest stars who for the most part weren’t as interesting or charming as what the show typically offers. Disappointing, really.
