To be honest, Discord is both confident and actually powerfull. Her enjoying his failings and fact that she might be impressed by the power of his magic could really work in possible fanfictions. Like maybe him helping her with impressive tricks.
Of course the canon will rather continue to strongly hint at fluttercord but Trixie is definetly a number 2 for Discord in fiction. Twilight, Celestia or Applejack never really had that potential as their shippers wanted them to have. TrixCord has that tsundere appeal that TwiCord coudn’t developed due to Twilight being either passive or just annoyed instead.
