oh, I actually considered some of that when I was planning out the drawings. There’s a few choices I made where it could’ve gone either way with some characters and honestly when I was drawing Tifa, I thought Fluttershy’s mane style could easily be adapted to work with Tifa’s long hair…
 
But my main reason for using Fluttershy to play as Aerith is because at the root of Aerith, she has a strong connection with the planet and nature itself within the game, since she’s a Cetra. And I didn’t feel like any other pony would be able to fit that better than Fluttershy. (along with the reasons you stated in the beginning of your comment). In the recent seasons, Fluttershy’s personality and expressiveness seems to be growing stronger though too, so I figured it’d be enough for her to be able to play as Aerith.
 
None of the ponies exactly fit the characters I assigned them too 100%, but I feel they’d be a well enough match. Of course, this is only my first run through that I put together specifically for Inktober last month, so I might change some characters around whenever I actually do go back to it…. aheh, also I personally ship AJ and Rarity so that’s another reason why Rarity is Tifa instead of Aeris, besides the fact that if I draw flashback-version of Tifa where she wears that hat, I can use one of the hats Rarity has from either her boutiques, or from the episode where she tried to be a farming pony.

I am in no way denying the beauty of the piece.  
There are similarities, both are dainty maiden living in beatiful cottage near dangerous location, have a healer role in their group, and are soft spoken, Aerith is more outgoing with a stronger personality and has a buiness sense while selling her flowers, there is that part where she get cloud in a dress and it’s good enough to fool Don Cornelo, and the self sacrifice for the cause… Er… Are you sure Rarity would not fit more. Tifa is also the shyer of the two. On the goldsaucer date Aerith talk about how Cloud act like Zack and wanting to meet the real him, Tifa can’t call it a date and do not manage to confess her feelings toward Cloud. It’s only when they are about to go on a suicide mission in the northern crater she get the courage to get close to Cloud.

Amusingly, this is actually a much more accurate match than people who’ve played FF7 might admit.
