Judging by what we’ve seen from them, this isn’t terribly hard to believe. They seem to have a certian “in the here and now only” sort of mind, which is what allows for their animalistic outbursts.

That’s part of my headcanon for why they’re not treated quite as equally as Ponies in the show; they’re sapient and sentient, but don’t have what anthropologists call “behavioral modernity”– like artistic sense or any sort of spiritual beliefs– and thus are considered by Ponies to be sort of second-class citizens. Dead is just dead to them, so they may be sad to lose a loved one, but feel no connection to a corpse; why not give it to the farmer to sell for leather and meat?

Fluttershy may be Kindness Pony, but there is a certain amount of cold pragmatism required to take care of animals in groups, especially when some of those animals eat other animals. I’m sure she’s very kind when she kills those fish quickly and cleanly so she can feed them to the bridge ferrets.

No, come on man, don’t you remember? She cried for like two seconds, and then she was all business about confessing to Celestia. Philomena didn’t revive for several moments after that.

Fluttershy probably spends an entire day crying after putting a bunny through the rabbit wringer. But she does it because it’s kinder than letting them suffer through whatever.

Just because she cares for animals doesn’t mean she’s a crazy PETA animal activist. She understands the laws of animal nature.
