I have to say, I’m amused by the fact that Pinkie, who once pulled off a prior generation look, is the only one who seems pleased by that discovery.

He’s generally a great writer, easily my favorite of the IDW lot. His Discord comics are the best, and his Sombra backstory was like my favorite issue of the comics ever.
 
BUT there are a couple points people hold against him.

Interesting, the way I reconcile the bit about Twilight not having friends or at least not accepting others’ friendship is that the classmates from Amending Fences were more aquaintences than actual friends, but tried to bring Twilight & Moondancer out of their shells. Twilight felt she was a bad friend to them later on because she now had the understanding of social interaction to realise how much effort they put in. Most of the classmates were alright with how things turned out even though she didn’t really stay in touch because they were closer to each but wanted to keep Twilight from isolating herself and they managed what they set out to do, even if it was through befriending completely different Ponies.
 
Then Moondancer went off the rails because she reached the point where she was starting to warm up to others a bit before Twilight did, bus wasn’t pushed through the difficult stage like Twilight and took Twilight’s absence as a personal rejection and ended up backsliding. It’s quite interesting the way Twilight has been juxtaposed with other Ponies who have something in common with her and serve to illustrate other ways she could have turned out. Actually, they’ve done this with other characters too such as Lightning Dust showing how Rainbow Dash would be without her Loyalty to others, Suri illustrating how Rarity could have been if she didn’t hold to her values, and the FlimFlam Brothers’ lacking care Applejack has in the quality and integrity of her products.

Well Twilight “had no friends” at the beginning of the series, but as we found out in Amending Fences that wasn’t literal.
 
She just didn’t appreciate them or treat them like good friends.
 
Starswirl could have been in a similar situation where he just didn’t care as much about his friendships compared to his magic career. Actually, considering the basis for the whole “Starwirl had no friends” canon is one line of dialog saying he “didn’t understand it like Twilight does now”, that doesn’t necessarily mean he didn’t have any. Those two you mentioned are proof of that much at least.

The story is about Starswirl and set in the past, so I don’t think the mane 6 will even be in it. Probably just a funny variant cover.

I wonder if that’s just a joke cover, or an actual storyline and they really find the remains of the older generations.

Starswirl had friends? I thought it was just Scorpan and Celestia.
