Personality:
Radiant Jewel is bold, brash and confident, not unlike her mother. However she’s less of a diva, and more of a gal who knows JUST what she wants. She finds her logical but creative approach best suited for gemstones, which beautiful but tough inside and out—just like her. She can’t sew or cook if her life depended on it, but she’s always willing to lend a helping hoof no matter what. Being as ladylike as she is, she still finds herself being “one of the guys,” as she fits the outdated tomboy stereotype in her core: unafraid of dirt, vulgar, dominant, determined, and ingenious. However, she’d rather be caught dead before proclaiming she’s “not like other mares,” believing that her femininity is a strength just as much as any “masculine” traits she has.
Relationships:
Growing up, Jewel had a rough relationship with her mother. While she looked up to Rarity immensely, she just couldn’t get the hang of sewing, cooking, or anything else that came naturally to her. This often resulted in scoldings for almost burning the house down. Believing she would never be like her, Jewel went into a tomboy phase which only resulted in more scoldings. However, now that Jewel has found her niche in jewelry-making and embraced her own femininity, she and Rarity are close as can be. Jewel does love her father too, but nothing beats a mother-daughter bond.
While she and Royal Splendor don’t have a whole lot in common, Jewel often takes it upon herself to look after her shy little brother. This manifests mostly in her handling awkward social situations for him, and giving anyone who picks on him a good talking-down if the situation is bad enough. While it doesn’t help him learn to fend for himself in the long run, Jewel cares for Roy and is always willing to defend him. Even then, she can get quite nosy in his love life. But she’s just looking out for him, right? Jewel also maintains a positive relationship with her Canterlot half-sister Primrose, but they’re more like friendly acquaintances than sisters.
Landing a part-time gig working for the Wonderbolts has certainly had its perks! By “perks,” I mean Jewel’s coworker, Storm Strike. While Jewel works in Ponyville’s ground headquarters, Storm passes through often to pick up deliveries for the Wonderbolts. The two have hit it off quite well, and their acquaintanceship may be developing into something more. Jewel has found herself quite attracted to the mare in both looks and personality, especially with her hardworking spirit. Why, she may have to ask her out on a date one of these days…
Despite Jewel’s confidence, her life hasn’t been without heartbreak. She’s been through many failed relationships, but she will never forget what she went through with Firefly. They did love each other—at least, that’s what Jewel believed. Firefly, meanwhile, never openly expressed affection to Jewel, and whenever she’d refer to her as her “girlfriend” she’d try to deny it. It got even worse when she discovered Firefly was sleeping with other mares, and that’s when she broke it off. Even today, Jewel struggles with finding a partner she knows will truly commit to her.
Of course, Jewel has plenty of good friends outside of her family and love life. Pristine Melody and Paint Swirl are her two gal-pals. The three of them do all the girly things together—makeovers, spa dates, light gossiping, and more. They’ve certainly bonded over the girly things in life, but are also there for each other when they’re down as true friends should be. This isn’t to say that Jewel can’t be “one of the boys” as well; she and Firework have been “bros” for years and still engage in mud fights now and then. Jewel always wins. They like getting into mischief together, like spying on their siblings’ dates or teaching their younger relatives about the wonders of sex. Jewel was also friends with Lightning Bolt in their youth, but he’s grown too much out of his rough-and-tumble days to be anything but a stick in the mud.
Cutie Mark:
The gemstones on Jewel’s flank represent just that—her talent for working with genstomes. Specifically, jewelry-making. While she’s always had an eye for beauty and aesthetic like her mother, Jewel does her research and tailors her jewelry based on the meaning behind each gem and metal she uses. She hopes that by creating jewelry with meaning, her clients can feel just as confident and radiant as her.
