I’m a few chapters in on a fanfic where Twilight’s power surge that got her her cutie mark wasn’t stopped and the overload of magic burned out her mind, or something to that effect. So far it’s really good, so even if something goes against canon it doesn’t make it a bad fic.
 
However, I have to agree with you on this point. Why would becoming an Element bearer make you impotent? If I had to wager a guess it would be something like a safety mechanism. If you have kids you might settle down and become weak, or not be available at a key moment, but I know that doesn’t make a lot of sense considering that could happen anyway without a kid, and the Elements themselves do the fighting, regardless of the physical strength of the ponies involved. Haven’t checked out the fic myself, so I have no idea if it gives a justification for it,

Not all fanfics require that much logic. See every other fic with Discord. The really important part of a fic is the plot structure. Of course, nothing on this page, the image above nor the sentence-long description in the comments, indicates the quality of this fic.
 
Another way to look at it: There are multiple secrets behind the Elements and one of them (fan made, mind) is a sterilizer. Hidden in the core could be the cause of such a function. Also note that the Elements change shape at least three times throughout the series so far.
 
This means, inside the Elements is a core of intangible magic, supposedly. Because why wouldn’t something retain the same functions even if it changes shape? Kind of like a PC after one upgrades it’s software or Martian Manhunter.
