The whole magic system in Equestria Girls never made a lot of sense.
 
Ponying up turns their ears into pony ears and gives them wings if their Equestrian clone is a pegasus or alicorn, and they can fly with those wings. “Super” ponying up does the same only it makes the wings crystal and also changes their outfits. In both cases, all the girls combined can use a Elements of Harmony / Rainbow Power-esque rainbow beam.
 
At first, the girls only ponied up at the end of the first movie, when playing music during Rainbow Rocks, and when showing off their element in Friendship Games. In Legend of Everfree they can seemingly do it at will. Super mode was only when they received the geodes.
 
As for the geodes themselves, they were created at Camp Everfree and each of the seven girls gets an extra ability just for being close to them, and then by carrying the geode anywhere (the leaked Russian music videos shows the girls using them to fix a bus, of all things). So long as they have the geode they can use their ability at any time, ponied up or not.
 
They don’t seem to be giving abilities all matched to their pony counterparts, because Sunset is already a pony and Rarity and Pinkie both have abilities that their pony versions do not.

Yeah, it never really made sense but it’s not necessarily terrible.  
I prefer them being weirdly super magical with no explanation over them not doing anything at all in the main series. And really, Pinkie’s and Rarity’s powers are fucking cool

Also, Applejack and Rainbow Dash both have strength and speed beyond their Equestrian counterparts.
 
It’s only Fluttershy and Twilight who have abilities comparable to their pony selves, and in Twilight’s case it’s just basic telekinesis that any unicorn in Equestria has. And just why Sunset has mind-reading powers, no idea.

Would Dr. Whooves be a teacher or a student at CHS?

I wonder how they will handle airing the specials in america. Will they air them weekly like the TV show or play all 3 on the same day in the form of a movie?

I wonder what it will be about.

So far I’ve only seen the first two (EQG and Rainbow Rocks) and I’m really enjoying it. I don’t understand all the hate that the movie got when it first came out. I mean, it’s nothing fantastic but it wasn’t worth all the heat that it seemed to be getting left and right.
 
Oddly enough the one major complaint that I have is that Rarity and Twilight never grow a unicorn horn whenever they go all Pony form. It’s like…why? At least AJ and Pinkie have the excuse that they don’t HAVE an extra accessory to grow, but would it have killed them to add this one little detail to those two?

RR was very well received, considering the amount of hate for the first movie. The reason why EQG got so much shit is because well, it was plain bad to most people, as well as riding the hate from the fact that Twi turned alicorn. I personally hated the first movie, but a very avid fan to all the other movies, to the point where I’m looking more forward to any EQG content, more than the real show.
 
People said that the reason why horns aren’t there is because of the simplicity of the toys and all that, which honestly, I don’t see a real problem with considering something like the wings could be far more breakable than the horn. That and maybe they didn’t know how to make it look right when they were still doing designs.

I admit that the first one is pretty weak as a movie. The entire story is built on nothing but High School cliches including the ultimate cliche of the BIG SCHOOL DANCE COMING UP!
 
However, it doesn’t warrant outright hatred from me. I think you’re right in that the hatred mostly stems from the hate people had for Twilight’s Ascension and how this movie was a direct follow up to that happening, something that I also don’t have such hatred for.
 
As for the horns, I think they just got lazy. The designs were specifically done to make an easy and direct connection between the human and pony counterparts, and if they could include the wings for the pegasi, they could have also included the horns for the unicorns.
 
To be fair, though, that’s just nitpicking.

Sunset and Twilight grow horns in the climax of Friendship Games.

The only reason some people watched the first Equestria Girls movie was because of the new pony content at the beginning.
 
It really wasn’t until the second movie that it started to come into its own though, the first one was pretty bland.

Yeah, I don’t see Sunset as being any worse than Nightmare Moon. I even put her above Sombra as a villain simply because she seems to have more of a character, though I admit her change of heart was really sudden and sporadic, even for someone that got the tar beat out of them.

I’m guessing lazyness. Maybe. The same reason the eqg minis lack wings. The concept art of the minis had them with horns but it’s absent in the final product. Interestingly there were cardboard cut outs with rd and fs minis with wings when they were showing off the new waves.

I look forward to seeing human Starlight Glimmer’s role in the specials as I like the pony version.
