I could understand some hesitance over games like chess or poker, despite there being many who would classify those games as “sports”, but golf seems a bit more straightforward- it is, after all, an outdoor athletic competition played with a ball and club, similarly to baseball, cricket and polo. It’s even part of the Olympics.
Oxford defines “sport” as “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.”
Dictionary.com’s primary definition of the word is even more explicit in its inclusion: “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.”
Granted, that’s a fairly broad definition and I know some would object to including hunting and fishing, but it does go to show how “sports-like” golf really is in comparison to some of the other activities that are often cited as sports.
In any event, do what you feel is best. I’ve no interest in getting into a protracted debate over a game I don’t even enjoy myself. ;)
