Perhaps winter season starts earlier in Equestria, about the same time it started back then, so Hearth’s Warming Eve isn’t set on a particular date, but an x amount of days after winter started.
That was an idea I wished they had voiced. But even if its not the case then the episodes featuring Hearth’s Warming are just out of chronological order, not actually extra winters (I don’t recall if any of the CMC appeared in the Tank winter episode without their cutie marks). We can still say that for the ponies less than two years have passed since the show started.
Crazy theory: Hearth Warming doesn’t take place in winter. It’s actually spring or summer but since the ponies control the weather they just make it snow for a few days to remember how the hate of the three tribes attracted the Windigos.
Really? Cause I’d like to see him attack some pony over spoken words. We’ve already seen how Maud reacts when her sisters are in danger, should would get pretty ugly pretty fast.
My bits are on Maud. And heaven help Mac if the shy one turns out to be a hulk. xD
Apparently, supposedly, heavily implied by show staff, all of s1 through 3 was all of 1 year. This is also their second Hearth Warming together, but it’s the third winter. So despite what people say, we NOW have a more solid basis that Twilight has at least been in Ponyville for ALMOST two and a half years as of this episode.
Animation error or not, it has been 5 seasons now, which could be anywhere around the same amount in years (if not more), and it’s been at least implied the Applebloom’s supposed to be a ‘late bloomer’ in obtaining her CM, so it’s not surprising in the least that her sprite would start getting a little more adult-sized.
Plus, like DuskFox mentioned, her voice actor is also getting noticeably older, so that’d be another reason to slightly change the sizing on AB’s look.
Cutie Marks don’t have anything to do with aging. Look At Zipporwhill and others. Plus, Appl Bloom is big only here. It’s just the animation.

I think it might be aging. She recently earned her cutie mark, and there’s also the deeper voice (I know it’s the voice actor aging, but still)

Well, AB’s stomach isn’t as close to the ground as it used to be in the first couple seasons. Then again different animators tend to just be inconsistent with those between episodes.
