yeah that’s what i was thinking, too. those really look like larvae to me. and there’s the title, Wooden Mare. my first thought was “termites”.  
wikipedia quote:

RD looks defeated here, dead inside. and now she’s being decomposed, returning to the earth. like termites do with dead plants.  
might be farfetched, but this is a sharpieboss image after all

That thing and that droplets on her shoulder, those darker ‘heads’ and strangely uniform ‘body’ segments.  
Now I seriously doubt the ‘safe’ tag.  
You can google some larva images but I advise you not to.
