I’m certain Aizen is the king of the trope. It makes me wonder who approved of such a character. He’s ridiculously perfect of a villain to the point that it’s almost vile bad writing. In case anyone asks being a perfect villain is a bad thing. Aizen is a pretty severe case.

Glimmer is one too but she’s nowhere as severe as Aizen since she actually looks like she has a salvageable character.

Nope villain sue is pretty much a Mary Sue that’s evil. It’s less of a separate thing and more of a classification though a villain sue is easy to identify because they’re so rare and they’re usually beaten through a asspull method and are a karma Houdini at the end of it all. Hence why I call Glimmer one.

Uhhh Mary Sues can totally be antagonist. What your implying is that Mary Sues can only be main characters which isn’t true in the slightest.

The better term for the antagonist is the villain sue.

Actually Starlight is a weird case because she’s less not beaten by the events around her and more like the episode realized they didn’t know how to beat her so they came up with that contrived wasteland scene. She’s stuck in the border of a left character and an actual Mary Sue. Anyways the only Mary Sue I can think of at the moment is that Kelpie from the comics.

Actually I think the better word to describe Starlight is The Scrappy.

@Jades

Not even a little. Starlight is challenged and beaten by the events the occur around her. She’s strong, yes, but strong doesn’t make a Mary Sue.

Honestly, MLP doesn’t have any Mary Sues that I can think of. Celestia COULD have been one, but they wrote her in a very different way.

@redweasel

Um, no. While that is certainly a trait of Mary Sues, the true quality that defines them is they are a character that is never challenged by the events that occur around them. Everything is handled effortlessly, failure is a foreign concept and any flaws they are written to have (usually mental or social ones) are either ignored entirely, or are quickly bypassed when they do appear.

The Fluffiest
@Background Pony #3CEE
“I mean yeah sure she’s inexplicably better at magic in every way than the literal element of it even as an alicorn, but that doesn’t mean she’s written like an unrealistically gifted self-insert character who has a brooding personality but everyone comes to like her anyways, because… because.”

@Mellow91
She’s too OP to really fit into the show proper as a constant, IMO. She can casually fly with her magic; That’s some mary sue OC bullshit.

Is it? Remember, she is close to Twilight’s level of magical ability (which was the reason Twilight couldn’t stop her directly), and Twilight herself has demonstrated some ability in this area.

Starlight may just be better practiced at it, or maybe it’s more in tune with her kind of magic (like how Twilight uses teleportation spells more than any other pony we’ve seen).

Final image of season roll credits with modern pop music I recomend earth wind and fires September

@Keith Mowz
That’s what a Mary Sue is to you?

Maybe you should brush up on what a Mary Sue exactly is. I mean, she’s even more powerful than Twilight with magic, yeah, but she’s not infallible, or even really good at anything else. I bet there will be some really good episode ideas with her learning how to befriend ponies who aren’t equal in season 6.
