Well, yeah, that was the part that didn’t include Starlight’s backstory, I loved that too.
I meant mostly about the merit system that goes along with it, especially considering how far Celestia is willing to take Twilight’s destiny at the cost everyone else’s safety, but also how some people just aren’t happy with their destiny and get lost in the dust. Those were the kind of people who joined Starlight’s village in the first place. Most of the members before the Mane 6 showed up sought out getting their cutie mark removed.
Cutie marks are less a system and more a part of somepony, though, in a sense that seems to me halfway between the biological and the theological; basically it’s like a really big freckle that’s also wired into your soul. At least, that’s my take on it.
And I liked the finale, but mostly for the alternate timelines. Cyborg Dashie is awesome.

No kidding. Both the premier and most of the finale demonstrated how they were on completely different frequencies in terms of experiances.
Problem is, before that blasted lame backstory of hers was presented, her worldview, while warped, wasn’t entirely wrong. People like Troubleshoes and the people who originally sought out her village all had problems with the cutie mark system, whether it made them stand out too much or make their lives miserable where they used to live.
How could Twilight ever relate, when she’s lived her life with only good fortune without any true hardship?
I don’t think either of those solutions would of worked. People being different was just a part of her main issues, and nothing Twilight said should of had any impact on her overall morality. I think the real conclusion should of been that destiny can be forged by pure effort. Something both Starlight AND Twilight could of learned from. Instead, this finale felt like filler as a result. Just more of the same.
Of course, her backstory was so simplistic that there was almost nothing to work with. Random questions like “did you send letters?” “did you move closer to him?” “did you join the school with him eventually” “have you heard of the Elements of Harmony before’, make ‘the rise of Starlight Glimmer’s origin’ extremely flawed and full of holes.
It doesn’t help that Starlight being listening to Twilight at all seems implausible.
The only things I can think of that would have believably brought her around are either being forced to see how delusional her worldview really is, or having one of the Mane 6 save her life, which might have convinced her that people can care about each other even if they’re different.
I think I like that second one, actually.
Perhaps it was because of that. Starlight acted on a level of wit and perspective that was on an entirely different wavelength then Twi, and her villain-esque attitude mocked Twi’s incredibly narrow perspective the whole way through. The only trump card Twi had was the future timelines cause-and-effect.
Like you said, no connection was made due to trouble on either or both their parts. Making the resolution incredibly rushed and unbelievable.
Considering what Starlight had put her through, I can understand why she might have trouble making that connection.
It’s not the first time this has been an issue. This has been an ongoing problem between her and Discord (admittedly, Discord wasn’t exactly eager to solve it), and she was wary of Sunset Shimmer for a brief moment in Rainbow Rocks (though their little heart-to-heart in the kitchen helped with that). The only one for whom she never hasitated was Princess Luna.
Except Twilight didn’t open up to her. That’s the problem. She didn’t acknowledge anything Starlight had had even a grain of truth, despite after Amending Fences she should have the maturity to see some of it and empathize.
What Twilight was doing wasn’t truly empathizing with her beliefs. She was asking to be her support group without addressing Starlight’s issues. Starlight is not an average person and she isn’t a child, she may not be diamond hard but she is both an experienced schemer and an ideologist who thinks on a completely different wavelength then Twi. Twi’s empty friendship speeches, from her perspective, should of been as nauseating as they were back in ‘SHUT UP!” town.
Starlight only put herself at their mercy of her own free will. While that’s infinitely more possible then them ever becoming best friends forever or actually believing what they are selling in terms of friendship, its still far-fetched considering she never destroyed the original reality and she’s an experienced schemer with high convictions.
Starlight considered Twilight not a rival, but merely a tool with power that got in her way. To reference Jojo, its quite similar the way Dio regarded Jonathan Joestar. The only thing that effected Starlight’s mental state was the truth of the futures being created, Twilight never struck a chord with Starlight until she made a complete 180 in personality.
I think in a way she’s grateful to the mane 6. They had her at their mercy and they decided to try being friends with her. That and Twilight’s dedication to stop her I think struck a chord with Starlight.
Twilight opened up to her, and I think Starlight appreciated that. What she clearly really wanted all this time was acceptance. She thought marks meant that no one else would accept her. Twilight proved her wrong.
Her actions towards Twilight and her friends was revenge/recompence for them ruining her village. Her longterm ideology wasn’t changed just because the Mane 6 were necessary in the past, she still sees the same problems with the status quo and nothing Twilight said countered those views. All she had to do was take back her actions of revenge.
I could possibly believe she would turn herself in for moralities sake, if she wasn’t a hardened schemer, but she still believes the status quo is wrong and she would have no interest in becoming best friends forever with the Mane 6. That’s just ridiculous.
I know. My point was that I don’t think Starlight backed down JUST because of Twi’s speech. She also had the sight of where her actions led burned into her mind.
Her actions ended the fucking world in a different timeline. Nopony in the normal timeline was affected by Starlight’s fucking about with time travel.
After she saw that her actions ENDED THE FUCKING WORLD!!!
Pretty much. Its kind of sick that in the same 2-parter, they just ignore all her morality points at the end, make her a wuss, and force her to reform with a weak support group speech.
For all the villainous potential and scheming to be tossed aside as if it was nothing? Not cool.

And frustrating, because seriously, as long as she’s talking with you, you can’t be like “Hey, Starlight. Just got back from the future you helped create. King Sombra enslaved half of Equestria and everyone still has their cutie marks. But hey, that’s what happens when you break up the elements of harmony.”
There was a lot of strange danger this episode.
