People are so stupid these days…

I really do want Sunset to come back, but in what capacity I’m not sure. I know for one thing that if she does, I want the entire episode shown from her perspective.  
As in, she arrives in Twilight’s Castle but there is no one home. Before finding Twilight and co., she decides to find her family(parents) and also…a slow, dramatic walk up to Celestia, including her trying to convince the guards to grant her an audience and such. They both cry, both are apologetic (Celestia never really did anything wrong, but I can imagine she blames a lot of Sunset’s corruption on the way she taught her), we finally get the closure to their story. Back in Ponyville, Sunset marvels at the similarities between the Human and Pony world and then, over in a park lie all of the Mane 6, talking, laughing and playing.  
Sunset slowly approaches them and Twilight, distracted, is the last to turn. Before she does, the other 5 squint their eyes, trying to remember where they saw her before, then they realise. Upon hearing their gasps, Twilight turns and sees Sunset. Then we get a close up of Sunset looking at all of them and saying, ‘Hey guys….I’m back. Nice to meet you all again, um, for a second time, heh’. Episode ends.

Could gibber on forever about my thoughts regarding Sunset and Equestria, but for the time being there probably is admittedly more for her in the human world.
 
Obviously they would get along. They have a few things in common to bond over.

Sunset Shimmer is not going to abandon the friends she made in the human world, she will visit Ponyville occasionally, but she’s will not stay there permanently. You lot have to deal with that fact.
 
Sunset is my favourite character, but this kind of thing is just making her look bad is slowly starting to put me off her. Oh and if Sunset and Starlight met, they will be friendly with each other.

Nah, just kidding, but really, no one should join the mane six. I hope Starlight just because a minor friend they bring back every one in a while.

Can’t say for sure what Starlight’s role in the series will be going forward, but Sunset would have been my first choice to join the mane six as well. Alas.

My sentiments exactly, OP.

There’s nothing saying Starlight is a permanent character. My guess is Twilight will teach her, like she said, use the mane six to get her experience, and then send her off on her merry way.

…Or Starlight’s story could just be a parallel of Sunset’s because of the differing series.
