You want to know why say Jaws, or even the original Five Nights at Freddy’s (gets some nails and boards ready for imminent Crucifixion) have a better jump factor than most horror movies these days? For Jaws, there was a significant build-up to the reveal of the titular shark meaning the first-time viewer knows the the shark will show up but they’re still caught off-guard by it when the reveal happens.

For FNAF, the jumpscares only a consequence for losing meaning even a master at the game would still be shocked by the kill-screens (the fact that the animatronics look like failed Chuck-e Cheese mascots doesn’t help).

Quality is also an opinion, just saying. I see most movies as crap, while the rest see then as “good”.
To avoid this kind of senseless fights over opinions, ask yourself, is it subjective or objective? Quality is subjective, quality is not an attribute of matter, it’s an interpretation of a bunch of other attributes. Even if what you say is true about the movie, it might not be important for others’ “quality” measure. The only thing you can say is that that happened, that’s as objective as you can get, the rest is your opinion.

The only recent horror movie I’ve watched that was good, at least for the first half of it, was The Babadook. It had so much build up, but I have to admit the ending was horrible. A shame.

Lol see… Theres a difference between “Opinion” and “Quality” and when you have scenes where audio is missing, where characters teleport mid scene without explanation. And when you have sorely blatant foreshadowing. A movie can’t really call itself “Good”.

In fact, a lot of recent horror movies are just plain bad when you think about how much money goes into them with how poor quality they are. They get over hyped and wind up being either entirely jumpscares, low build-up obvious twists, or painfully heavy-handed and bland. A movie can be scary without orchestra stings and jumpscares… Look at Martyrs. It was a great, chilling, and disturbing movie. It didn’t need jumpscares or even any loud music. It just had good imagery and tense atmosphere build up almost the entire movie. It was a great look into the minds of twisted people.

tl:dr: Unfriended is just another jumpscare flick. Watch something better that will actually scare you.
