Oh, that is true, now that I think about it. We do have “sparkling” cider. But as far as I know it’s usually referred to as such. Generally “cider” by itself refers to the non carbonated version. I can’t imagine them saying “hard cider” on the show though, so I suspect that by just saying “cider” that hard cider (not sparkling cider) is what they are referring to.

That is an idea I find amusing. As for the cider in the show being alcoholic, it seems vague to me.. But it still is impressive that the episode didn’t get censored elsewhere.
Well, speaking from an American point of view where we have both alcoholic and non-alcoholic cider for sale, I can say that the cider in the show was alcoholic. Non-alcoholic cider is not a carbonated or fizzy drink. Hard or alcoholic cider is a carbonated drink, and their cider mugs were clearly filled with a carbonated liquid. That makes it hard cider. Plus, it goes a long way to explain the ponies actions/reactions to the cider (Cheerilee’s face), and why they wanted it so bad.
Personally I thought it was the funniest thing about the episode, and I was surprised Hasbro let it slide like they did. Ponies are freaking boozers!

The only thing I can see that would warrant a comparison to PG-13 films would be the inclusion of alcohol.
Yes, I know Dumbo had a whole musical sequence based around the title character being drunk, but much like with smoking in various forms of media, there has been a push to portray them in a more negative light than in decades past. For example, antagonists or characters portrayed as bad influences can partake as part of a moral lesson, and films usually have an anti-smoking PSA before the feature presentation.
Having said that, if one is offended by the bad habits of others, rather than concerned or amused, one could go the route of English dubbing of anime and video games: sake turned into tea (Tenchi Muyo!), beer into juice (Harvest Moon), beer into milk (Yo-Kai Watch), a cigarette into a toothpick (Rurouni Kenshin), or a wine bottle into a large sausage (Sonic X).
@Jerkface
If it has, than this is the most PG PG-13 stuff I’ve ever seen. Seriously, I am pretty certain that this would get a PG rating… Or the ratigs are even dumber than I already thought.

I’ve heard several people counter that there IS non-alcoholic cider that is also Foamy. So…. Eh~
Either way, it was apparently some DANG good cider.

Also mildly relevant.
And my religion. And Santa.
From what I understand, the Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000 was never shown in the UK because of it.
Not as funny, but helpful for those who might be unclear on how the cider process works.
@Azn
I think this one is more appropriate.

I guess it’s more of a “This kind of leans on more adult comedy” then the usual kid-friendly silliness we get to me.
That sounds like a good way to get kidnapped.
