Description

A guy played through Crusader Kings 2 with the intent of creating a world ruled by horses, taking advantage of an overlooked corner of the rules that lets you (1) install your horse as a noble, and then (2) treat the horse like any other character – including speaking with them and marrying them off to produce heirs.

Rainbow Dash ends up reconstituting the Roman Empire. Full narrative and savefile at the source.

Actually, it was an dynasty that originally ruled most of the Islamic world around the 7th and 8th centuries, before being desposed and nearly wiped out by the Abbasids. the reminders fled to Spain, established their own Emirate there and ruled there until 1031.

The description isn’t kidding when it calls this an overlooked corner of the rules! In detail:

To get a horse on the throne, you start by being insane. The Lunatic trait (which can be gained by studying the stars, going into hiding, having too many marriages to close kin as a Zoroastrian, or making extremely out-of-character administrative decisions) unlocks various incredibly funny events, all of which sabotage your country. (A Viking lunatic raising a runestone has it engraved with a message that would make Discord proud.) In one of these random events, you appoint your horse as your chancellor.

The horse chancellor is where things start. He or she comes with a special trait, “hurr durr I’m a hoers” (or thereabouts), which keeps him or her from marrying, being given fiefs, having children, and having skills; after all, well, he’s a horse. But, if you’re a Catholic with lay investiture (a law which is rarely used and generally almost worthless), you can nominate a male horse to succeed to a bishopric, then assassinate the bishop to ensure that the horse gets onto the throne. (This is almost mandatory; the “Horse” special attribute also lowers the horse’s health, meaning he or she tends to die soon after showing up in the game.) If the bishopric is at least county-level, the horse bishop will invite in other horse courtiers – and these won’t have “hurr durr I’m a hoers”, and so they can have skills, be given fiefs, and be married.

Alternatively, you can have your horse tutor a child in your court, with the style of education that has the child focus on adopting his/her tutor’s cultural heritage. You can then give your culturally-equine child (with bad stats, because they were educated by a horse) a county-level title or higher, and he or she will once again invite in his/her cultural kin: horse courtiers without the “Horse” trait, who can be married and enfeoffed normally.

When they were informed of this loophole (by the AAR which this is a scene from, in which Rainbow Dash restores the Roman Empire), Paradox collectively cracked up, and promised that they’d never fix it. Rumor has it that horse achievements may be coming soon; there might even be achievements specifically about the Zunist religion (ancient Afghan sun-worship) plus horses.

(There’s also another, closely related, loophole, which allows your character to become immortal by converting to Islam, making the Hajj to Mecca, converting away from Islam to lose the “Hajji” trait, and then converting back again. This costs 1,500 prestige per conversion and de-conversion – which is a staggering amount, by the way – in exchange for gaining 1 point of health. For reference, 3 points of health is a rather sickly character, 8 a very healthy one; if you can get up to 20 or 25 points of health, you can shrug off bubonic plague, recover from leprosy and syphilis, and probably not die of old age: the average time it takes you to die ends up being longer than the game’s timeframe. Unlike the horse bug, this loophole might be closed at some point; it would have really strange consequences in multiplayer otherwise.)
